In the midst of all the pomp and circumstance of the State Opening of Parliament, one lone true socialist voice rang out through the hallowed halls. Yes it was the irrepressible Dennis Skinner ramming home the one about the Tory Mole. The brilliant quip was met with howls of laughter.
Dennis is a great oul guy, one of the old school of labourite lefties, an antique from the era when a cloth cap was still a cloth cap by gummm! Dennis doesnt take part in this event, he doesnt shuffle his way through to the Lords to listen quietly to the Queens speech. He shuns the ermin!
And what of the Queens Speech.....
Well it was the shortest one in Labours eleven years. The Queen had no sooner left the Irish State Coach when she was back in it again and whirring back up the Mall to the sound of galloping hooves. She could have phoned it in!! But is this an indication that the Government have run out of ideas? Well no, they are merely concentrating all energies now on the recession.
In a way it was another mini budget, they are coming thick and fast these days, but the highlight was the promise of help for those struggling on mortgages. A new financial plan to help keep people in their homes for up to 2 years. 'Lose your job and you wont lose your house' is the government motto on this.It should be very welcome right across the board particularly with traditional Labour voters.
