"To Flax Swinglers:
WANTED IMMEDIATELY Twelve Men to SWINGLE FLAX - constant employ and extraordinary wages will be given.
Apply to Thomas DURBAN, King Street, Sandwich."
(Kentish Gazette 19 Aug 1808 p.1 col.2)
[NB. My dictionary mentions a SWINGLE as a wooden instrument shaped like a large knife, for beating flax or hemp and scraping from it the woody or coarse portions. A SWINGLER is one who cleans flax or hemp by beating and scraping it with a SWINGLE - from the Middle English SWYNGEL, Middle Dutch SWYNGHEL and related in origin to Old English SWINGELL ROD.]

Sue Nicholas said in a previous thread...
"My Gran used to wet nurse .There has been an article in The Dailly Mail this week about allowing someone else to breast feed your baby .My gran had todo this to bring money in"

11:4166647Thanks for that Kath. I remember my mum saying "you need a wet nurse" if I wouldn't tidy my room etc but I didn't know what it was or if it was just a saying. You live and learn, even at my age

There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

13:0566658Mine did when I was little if I would not think for myself about something simple, like what to do when I was bored.

22:4390910Could have been a house name. Does not currently appear to be any property of that name in the district.

18:4291193i find it hard to visualise a shop in new bridge, were there many in years gone past.
i love that bit about the paraffin being non flammable and odourless, if it wasn't most would have chosen to be a slaphead.
