I'd like to thank Paul Watkins for his reply, explaining to me just exactly what the council are doing to address the issue that I raised. I earnestly hope that these initiative are successful.

Taking into consideration some of the points put on this thread I decided I would have a quick look into alternatives to social housing, just to ensure that I was not shouting, and throwing my dolly out the pram, for no good reason. If my fellow forumites do not find it too boring (if you do don't read any more) I will, very briefly, summarise my findings.

To purchase a four bedroomed house in Dover the cheapest on offer is 135K, a very reasonable price I hear you all say, I agree, very reasonable and I could probably get a mortgage of 100K for my salary, any suggestions as to how I could raise the other 35K will be gratefully received.

OK, private rent. Only 4 properities on offer in Dover. Monthly rent 700 - 800 pounds, deposit ranging from 700 - 1000 pounds.

Given these interesting facts (and I post them purely for their interest). I really, really hope that the councils initiatives are successful.

PS - Bern, thanks, I should have known you weren't having a go at me.
