Surely if the cloud disrupts air travel and the ferries take up the slack and extra foot pax then maybe it could afford the motor museum the opportunity to run a few of their vintage coaches and charabancs to and from the port thus earning some well needed funds and giving the public a taste of the past.
The publicity for the musuem and Dover would be priceless.
BarryW could even man the WW2 Red Cross tea waggon and provide refreshments...at a price therefore raising funds for his forthcoming day in Pencester. C'mon you entrepreneurs get cracking.

some good ideas but dover is not the hub of enterpreneurs.
the much criticised harbour board are ahead of the game though, enlisting volunteers from their staff in the event of a rush.
they gained experience the last time and are now well stocked with all kinds of refreshments, toiletries, nappies and baby milk.
all credit to them.

there seems a strong difference of opinion between the head honcho at ryanair and the coves at the caa and met office.
the last two are not at risk of losing money though like ryanair.

Last year's ash problem was good for Dover and DHB laid on a lot of extra coaches to transport people from and to the station and Port.
There were also many helpful things done down at the Eastern Docks for the extra people.
The reason I know all of this is because DHB wrote to me about all they had done, so they are to be commended.

People who cannot go by plane owing to the ash clouds, and consequently travel through Dover, by courtesy should enter a restaurant or coffee shop and consume a meal or bun with coffee, leave some pounds, and be thankful!

Just had the following statement in from the Port spokesperson ..Many thanks to them
* *
The Port of Dover is on standby and is ready to accept a potential influx of foot passengers if the ash cloud moves South. We are liaising with the ferry operators on providing additional passenger capacity. The call has gone out for staff volunteers and plans are in place to provide essential provisions for passengers such as refreshments, toiletries, nappies and baby milk if required. Our contingency plans are tried and tested and we are well versed in coping with situations such as these. During the previous ash cloud crisis the Port successfully handled ten times as many foot passengers as normal all looking for a reliable way home, enough to fill 600 Boeing 747s

Why should they Alexander?
After all the disruption to their travel plans I should think they just want to reach their destination as fast as they can. I am hoping that DHB plans are not needed for all the travellers sakes..

It is good to learn that we did in fact get out act together last time and are making contingency plans if the need arises again.

Oh but I think DHBs' plans will be needed, Jan.
The ash cloud is travelling there and back to see how far it is.
Once in Dover, improvised travellers should buy at least one postcard and send it home to say they're on the way!

Again why should they Alexander, they will most likely be home before the postcard arrives.
