Let me start by saying both of these people make me sick. Matthew Woods posted comments on his Facebook page about missing April Jones has been jailed for 12 weeks and rightly so, but Azhar Ahmed convicted of posting a grossly offensive Facebook message about six dead British soldiers has been given a community order any thoughts ?

I agree Keith but since when has there been any continuity in sentencing it all depends who you end up with as judge which is all wrong.

Of course, the one thing the Law should not do is treat people or their particular cases equally. Just as when (heaven forfend) one were under siege one should not ration food in equal amounts, but rather apportion as to need.
Prison for this young 'eejit' is just plain dumb! Just because English Law has a long history is no reason to relive past errors. What he said did have severe consequences for many people and for him, that will not change over 12 weeks if it has not lessened by now.
Every, let me repeat, EVERY instance of revenge engenders and/or strengthens a feeling of entitlement. Not only in the public before the Law, but also within inter-public-relationships outwith the Law.
This IS the one thing that The Rule of Law is there to prevent.
Now, for this other guy I know even less about.
Any of us can be right, dead on the money, certain-sure, positive beyond all doubt.
BUT
This not only does not make us right etc. this does not oblige others to fall-in with whatever opinion or stance under consideration.

One should be free to make an utter (if temporary) fool of oneself.

I am overjoyed to be able to declare that as that there are now three examples of 'crazy-persons' I know progressively less and less about each as it comes up.
I have not said that one attracts friends by mouthing-off willy-nilly.
Is it not a positive boon to know the characters of this one and that?
If, as I imagine, it has been stated that, "There is NO place for racism in football!" It follows that there should be no place for self-declared racists either. QED

I make the the above statements without 'full' knowledge of the circumstances, but stuff filters through...even to me.

Oh I see, so when you said: One should be free to speak ones mind.
You didn't really mean it.
Thanks

Three months for posting up a sick joke on facebook is ridiculous. You get less for assault.
Unfortunately it's an easy cop for the police - nice and easy, no work involved and ups the crime stats.
Obviously what the bloke posted up was pretty disgusting, given the circumstances, but to imprison him makes a mockery of our system of justice.

As much as it makes me spit, I have to go with free speech
Its democracy and needs to be defended

bit of a grey area there has never been free speech otherwise newspapers would present us with all sorts of nonsense about famous people, even more than they do now.
with regard to this case i agree a custodial sentence is a bit over the top, 1000 hours community service would be more appropriate with a part of that cleaning the toilets in an army barracks.

Two similar offences and two different outcomes. Wonder why one got prison and the other got community service, do I dare say or am I going to sound racist.

It seems as if these two similar 'offences' were apportioned all too similar outcomes. I don't suppose the race of the imprisoning judge was a major factor though.

So we criminalise someone for bad taste?
When did people become so prurient?
Who decided his post was grossly offensive? and also who reported it to the maleficent boys in blue?
How does the prosecution of this twerp serve the public good?
