    Paul,

Going back to your original post I'm a fairly amateurish birdwatcher and I'm intrigued by by the picture and wonder where and when it was taken. On first glance I'd assumed it was our usual pest the herring gull but it has a very heavy bill and a yellow ring around the eye which would identify it as a glaucous gull, which isn't rare but is an infrequent visitor. Any ornithological experts here to enlighten me?
