Police hoped to 'smear' family of Stephen Lawrence, former officer claim
A former undercover police officer has alleged that he was instructed to spy on and "smear"
the family of Stephen Lawrence in the aftermath of the black teenager's murder in south-east London.
Peter Francis says he was requested by his bosses to find "dirt" that could be used against members
of the Lawrence family in the early aftermath of his racist murder in April 1993. He alleges that
senior officers deliberately withheld his covert involvement from Sir William Macpherson, who
headed the public inquiry into the role of police investigations.
The claim, one of a catalogue of new allegations, has reignited the controversy over covert policing
and calls into account the findings of the 1999 Macpherson report which concluded "institutional
racism" inside the Metropolitan Police.
Mr Francis said he posed as an anti-racist activist in the mid-1990s in his search for intelligence.
"I had to get any information on what was happening in the Stephen Lawrence campaign," he told
The Guardian. "Throughout my deployment there was almost constant pressure on me personally
to find out anything I could that would discredit these campaigns."
His account, to be detailed in a new book published this week, also alleges an unsuccessful
effort to discredit Duwayne Brooks, a friend who was with Mr Lawrence on the night he was
killed and the main witness to his murder.
Mr Francis says he obtained evidence that led to Mr Brooks being arrested and charged in October
1993, before the case was thrown out by a judge.

This sort of thing really does the police down, and they are an outfit unto themselves
and need to be more accountable

Exclusive: Met supergrass scandal - corrupt private investigators infiltrate witness-protection programme
Police officers knew for years about the crucial security breach - but did nothing about it...............
Days after the Metropolitan Police was rocked by incendiary claims that officers took part in a smear
campaign against the family of the murdered black teenager Stephen Lawrence,The Independent
can disclose that private investigators (PIs) were employed by organised crime gangs to try to
intimidate witnesses who had agreed to give evidence in high-profile trials.
Scotland Yard uncovered the shocking intelligence up to 15 years ago but, incredibly, did next to
nothing to stop the private detectives, who also worked for the News Of The World.
A registered police informant codenamed "Michael Green", who spent years undercover working
with a corrupt firm of PIs, warned his handlers at the Met that his colleagues were trying to locate
"supergrasses" under police protection and "actively worked on them to withdraw their damaging allegations

Disgraced Hillsborough officer Sir Norman Bettison linked to campaign to smear
Stephen Lawrence family
A former chief constable who was accused of involvement in a police cover up in the wake
of the Hillsborough disaster is to be investigated over claims that he sought to influence the
evidence of a witness to the Macpherson Inquiry into the death of Stephen Lawrence.
Sir Norman Bettison was referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC)
by the West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson.
Forces nationwide have been ordered to carry out a trawl or records and archives by the Home
Secretary to establish whether attempts were made to discredit members of the Lawrence family
though intelligence gathering or surveillance.

I think the Lawrence family are right, that there should be a public enquiry, not the police investigating the police.

Norman Bettison 'had smear file' on anti-racist campaigner
Former police chief allegedly co-ordinated campaign against man preparing to back
Stephen Lawrence family's campaign
Sir Norman Bettison has been referred to the IPCC over claims made by former colleagues at
West Yorkshire police.
A man decorated for his community work has been officially informed that he was the potential
victim of an alleged smear campaign orchestrated by the former police chief Sir Norman Bettison
, as he prepared to publicly back the Stephen Lawrence family's campaign for racial justice.
Mohammed Amran told the Guardian he was going to denounce police racism in the West
Yorkshire force where Bettison was a senior officer when dossiers are alleged to have been compiled on him.

More and more will leak out, it's time now for the mouse to announce there will be a public enquiry, not an enquiry of the police investigating the police.

The killers are in jail, public enquiries cost a fortune and solve nothing.
You're the same person who's always bleating about cuts now you want more money wasted

Im sure if I were the Lawrence family I would be horrified at your comments david,
A lot can be learnt from a public enquiry, we also see the police not operating in the way they should, and a body that needs to have respect, but also show respect.
The family has lost an innocent child,
and are finding out so many things,

So where does this end - the Bulger killer has been released AGAIN today - shall we have a public enquiry, or a public enquiry into previous public enquiries.
Mr and Mrs Lawrence have had their lives destroyed, the killers are in jail, move on

It's the Lawrence family that wants a public enquiry
As for the Bulger killers, should they be released, I think not but that's another story

Police 'admit secret recording' of Stephen Lawrence friend
Duwayne Brooks was with Stephen Lawrence the night he was murdered
The police have confirmed authorising the secret recording of at least one meeting involving
Duwayne Brooks, the friend of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence, his lawyer has said.
The BBC revealed recently that the Met Police had bugged meetings between Mr Brooks and
his lawyer Jane Deighton.
Ms Deighton, after meeting the deputy prime minister, said she believed there was more than
one instance of bugging.
Mr Brooks was with Mr Lawrence on the night he was killed in a racist attack.

Five police forces investigated over alleged Stephen Lawrence smear campaign
Police fractured my arm, says 'smear victim'
The investigation into alleged police attempts to smear the Stephen Lawrence campaign
and undermine the credibility of witnesses attending the Macpherson inquiry into the black
teenager's racist murder is focusing on the activities of five forces, The Independent has learnt.
Investigators are understood to be waiting for senior officers from Avon and Somerset
Constabulary and West Midlands Police to complete urgent trawls of their records in relation
to possible surveillance or intelligence gathering operations carried out in Bristol and Birmingham.
