I heard a small item in passing this morning..flowing forth from BBC's flagship Radio 4..so I dont have full details but it seems that our Lords are calling for less advertising on satellite television.
This is a good move and I wish them success in their efforts to get the amount of ad time reduced. There are just too many ad breaks on satellite TV and to my mind this is counteractive to the reason for advertising in the first place. People mentally swithch off, as they are simply too bombarded with crap advertsing like Confused.com or that Underdog thing. Try to catch an old Poirot and there are breaks every ten minutes destroying the programme completely. While trying to watch Murder on the Orient Express the other night, having missed it at christmas, one had to endure an assault course of mindnumbing banality every ten minutes.
Because the companies involved dont sell enough advertising they repeat the same ones over and over. Its murder and not even on the Orient Express!
The satellite channels can legally carry up to 12 minutes per hour whereas terrestrial can only use 7 minutes. Although in my bones I feel that more than 12 minutes is being shoved in our gobs constantly by satellite TV for the simple reason that they can get away with it.
So at last someone is now highlighting this abuse of airways power.
