Fortunately I do not have to visit my GP very often, but if I wish to see my own Doctor I can be sure I will have to wait awhile, or see another doctor.

Everyone Bern !
I spent 6 days in KCH in July (over a week-end - I was admitted on a Friday evening) and the Doctors came round on Saturday and Sunday; they may have been Registrars not full Doctotrs but seemed to be pretty good. The nurses looked after me too - so did Peter and Kathryn from Blakes who came over to see me on the Sunday and Bern on Monday.
I was in William Harvey earlier this month and the Doctors came round on Saturday, althought they were late as they had 4 emergencies to deal with (heart attacks and similar). The nurses on Saturday did seem less good than those on Friday.

The latest statistics (Sunday Times) show an alarming increase in deaths in hospitals over the weekends.
On the plus side, I rang up the William Harvey last night to inquire after my mother and I got through to an excellent sounding doctor or nurse who actually spoke to me like a grown up. Having had to try and make inquiries a lot of times over the last couple of years I was surprised because this was the first time I have ever been given an accurate and helpful run-down of her condition. I will be ringing again shortly, I will let you know how that goes.

I can only say the pass two years have seen myself in and out of Hospital at times somtimes it has been over two weeks at a time and even at this time ,I am going back most weeks, and the nurse who is looking after me at the St Peters Surgery and the surgeon etc have all been great,if I had to payout it would have cost many £1000,s and would I have got better treatment,No I would not have,I might be going in again in the new year but i know I will be well looked after.
No you don't, Vic. That is the point - it is too variable, too dependent on the whim of whoever is working at the time. I hope you are treated well, but I know you can't expect that.

Back to normal on the phone. passed round three people to find one that knew my mother was on their ward only to get a sullen "she's fine" and told the doctor will see her in the morning. The update from my brother, who was visiting at about the same time says that she is on two drops and being fed pureed food but having difficulty swallowing it. Sounds a bit less than "fine" to me.

Both times were around the shift change, Howard, so pot-luck if I was getting day or night staff. By the way, that should have read drips not drops. Thank you Bern.

Chris, I hope your mother is soon on the mend. With regards to the nurse's comment I guess 'fine' is a standard reply when they do not really know.

That would be the point Jan, after being swopped around a couple of people I should be entitled to expect that it was so they could put me on to someone who did know, rather than someone prepared to do the fobbing-off with platitudes.
