Roger: I have worked for the past 46 years without a break and without claiming one penny off the state. HMRC get their grubby little mitts on my and my husband's pensions before they end up in our (English) bank accounts. If we still lived in England we would get the allowance. You seem to assume that people who live abroad are well off. Why shouldn't I get something back from the system to which I have contributed for many years? I could take the view that people should not have children if they cannot afford them (thus qualifying them for benefits) but I don't. I know some quite rich people who have bus passes. Do you suggest that all these "perks" of retirement get means-tested?
Howard: I have never eaten a lotus in my life.
PS: I might spend my allowance paying my leccy bill but on the other hand I might just blow it on the excellent wines of my departement!!!!
