20:1377907I am just watching the news on Telly - unusually for me - and I am outraged! An article about kids harassing disabled people without any sanctions. What has happened to us that we collectively allow those little gits to hound and bully vulnerable people.

20:4877922It happens because the vast majority of the public and at times even the police just do not care.
I'd like to bring back the stocks for the little b.....ds or any other form of public humiliation so they get a taste of what it is like.

continual harrassment and the justice system was no help to them.
have seen it here in god's own dover, two people(seperate incidents) have been persecuted by kids because they had learning difficulties, they were accused of being peedos(sic), no help from constable plod.

00:1077982Yes, Howard, a mother killed her child and herself.
This response to this thread as opposed to the petty port arguements just about proves my point. People do not care.

00:2777983Jan, your thread only just came online, have some patience! Personally I do not see children in Dover harassing disabled people, and never have seen it happen in the past! the incidents where this has happened - wherever - are out of the norm, and probably went on because the competent authorities, including the local parson or priest, either were not informed or did not try talking to the offenders and/or their parents. But I personally have never witnessed it happen, and I pass many children during the day!

07:1977985The harassment and abuse of elders, the young, the disabled is, in fact, an everyday occurence which is largely ignored because it happens to a minority group. A society can be judged by how it treats its vulnerable and its weak. While a large part of me is irritated by the patronising assumption that all disabled people are vulnerable - that simply isn't true!! - having a disability does raise the target profile somewhat, draws attention, and that can attract bullys. I thuink Jans point is telling - how many people are more bothered by the financial discussions than this one?!

07:3877993Anyone who is different is fair game for bullys.
I remember seeing something in the paper not long ago about a 10 year old girl in a wheelchair being abused by teenagers and none of the nearby adults intervened on her behalf. terrible.

07:5477996Allexander....
You have proved what I have often thought, you do not read all posts in a thread.
This thread was started by BERN not me FOUR hours before your post, in that time there had been a large number of other posts on this forum, this is post 9.
Point made I think.

08:1677997Jan - people do not necessarily read through all posts in a single session. It is a time matter and a slower posting response does not mean any kind of disinterest.

09:1478013There are articles in the paper almost every day about yobs/thugs, whatever you want to call them, attacking older/disabled/vulnerable people and the worst part is that in most cases, they are not given a custodial sentence.
How can these judges/magistrates not put them away ? these judges are a bigger problem that the yobs; they allow them to carry on doing it and there is no deterrent.
I can't believe this.

09:2278014There was also a very unwholesome and disturbing TV programme about 6 or 8 months ago too which showed the most appalling stuff with the help of hidden cameras as i remember. You would think that the disabled would get support from their community but quite the opposite is the case. But it I guess it very much depends where you live too. It seems worse in areas of social depredation.

09:3078017Without putting on the old rose-tinted specs, this seems to be more of a problem now than it used to be. There has always been bullying and abuse, but society has become increasingly tolerant of bad behaviours of all sorts, with little or no sanctions, few boundaries set and fewer of those respected, and the result is unchecked and apparently accepted appalling behaviour. The risk of tolerating the breakdown in boundaries is that what few boundaries are left are not respected. I don't want to sound too retrograde, but I saw someone shopping in a supermarket in dirty jogging bottoms and a filthy and tatty sweatshirt yesterday. At what point did it become ok to shop, for instance, in your pyjamas? Or dress children up in faux-sexy clothes? And yes, I think it is all relevant to this topic!

10:4778033the most vulnerable are the mentally handicapped, they seem fair game to the low lifes.

11:0778040Jan, I read the whole thread before posting, but overlooked that Bern is the author of post 1, sorry!
Bullying often starts with small acts of disrespect that, unchecked, continue and get worse. There is also the group factor, where one encourages the other to join in.
Harasment of vulnerable people should be dealt with by various sectors of society, including parsons and priests, teachers, parents and local organisations that are open to society.
It means teaching children what is right and what is wrong.
However, for the record, I would not walk by and pretend not to see, if I saw someone being bullied.
But my every-day experience tells me that the vast majority of people are not bullies, children included, and that is what I wanted to point out too.

13:0078059we all agree that it is a minority that perpetrate these things alex, the best protection for the victims should be the police followed by no nonsense sentencing from the courts.
2 November 2010
13:0778060And a total lack of tolerance for this behaviour from the local communities. That old saying about it only takes one good man to do nothing for evil to triumph is spot on.

14:4278081This does go on and needs nipping in the bud even if it is a minority.
No one should have to put up with this.
Of course we need to look again at prison's who should be jailed, f we jail these people, who get's released to do so? as prison's full
The story on TV of the 2 brothers was tragic and should never happen

15:1278089there are plenty of shoplifters, petty thieves and fraudsters that could be let out and doing community work, whilst the real nasties are banged up.
