Also a stray duck paid a visit to the garden a few weeks ago:

28 August 2025 19:56387372Whilst tidying up the garden recently I thought that I had found a damaged football; it turned out to be a giant Puffball mushroom. It was in good condition and I was told that they are delicious to eat by a woodland expert but I decided to pass on that!
2 days later I found another one which was brown and dusty amongst the ferns.
They must have arrived in compost or bird droppings I suspect

19 September 2025 15:58387438Shades of Autumn and quite a heavy dew this morning. I grew these Cosmos from a packet of seed from my store which were 3 years out of sow by date; they were supposed to be ‘up to 45cm tall ‘ (18 inches in old money)! The Puffball mushroom is the 5th one that I have found in my garden which I intend to leave to see how big it gets!
The yellow begonias are coming to an end now and the blooms I had earlier were much larger but they are still quite a striking colour.
Plenty of colourful berries on the shrubs too which could be a sign of a harsh Winter if folklore is to be believed.

The only snag with that old wives' tale is that shrubs and trees don't modify their behaviour according to what's in the future - otherwise I'd be asking my Hawthorne for this week's Euromillions numbers!
