i live ten minutes from the hospital up a large hill, i can see the hospital from my window and see the birthing centre that i spend so much of my time at lately i refuse to use a bus to go down the road ?
Guess its a class thing because we live at St Rads ......... other places abroad cope better than this their lives dont stop time Britain was the same pathetic really . why should anyone be housebound because of lame authorities ???????????

You can find out if you or your bus are on a salting route here -
http://www.kent.gov.uk/SaltingRoutes/Map.aspx
and useful information here on what you can do yourself - doesn't apply to 8 months expectant mothers for sure!
http://www.kent.gov.uk/roads_and_transport/highway_maintenance/winter_maintenance_and_repairs/snow_clearance/parishes_and_local_communities.aspx
and this is KCC's policy on salting - - - - -
Roads which are salted
Our primary salting routes cover about 30% of roads in Kent, these include:
•all A and B class roads
•busy commuter routes
•other danger spots
•if more severe ice is expected or snow has fallen, we will put salt on other roads.
We review the salting routes every summer along with our Winter Service Policy document (PDF, 150k) and plan.
Unfortunately if your road has not been included on a salting route, it will not be considered again until the review next year.
We are not responsible for schools, offices or car parks. It is up to the people who look after these sites to treat them. The Highways Agency are responsible for motorways and trunk roads, and Medway Council look after roads in the Medway area.
Footpaths
If there is prolonged ice or snow, we will treat footpaths and pavements in priority order starting with heavy use areas around:
•shopping centres
•schools
•railway stations
•bus stops
•medical centres and doctors' surgeries
•residential homes
•industrial and commercial centres
•steep gradients.
If there is a salt bin, you can use the salt in this on icy pavements and footpaths.

There is a heck of a lot of snow out there and I am sure it is quite unusual to be on the ground so long and it will still be cold for at least a few more days so I don't expect it to go far !
Been nice knowing you :)

What a silly remark Mel, "Guess its a class thing because we live at St Rads" there are loads of places not gritted around the town nothing to do with "class".
I battled to work this morning on the ice at the bottom of Frith Road where all the school children walk if that is not a priority I do not know what is. If more comes tonight I will be housebound again.

sadly the situation has not improved this year despite all the reassurances of money ploughed in.
a quick look at the facts show that it snowed last saturday night, it is now thursday afternoon and the pavements and some roads are more dangerous than ever.
nobody expects outlying areas to be treated in the same way as town centres but the overall effect is worse than when we had days of snow last year and the year before.

Laws in Areas of Canada (could work here ...possibly):
Oshawa: Homeowners are responsible for clearing snow from municipal sidewalks. If sidewalks is not cleaned within 24 hours after a snowfall, city workers will clean it and the cost will be placed on the homeowners tax bill.
On a lighter note also an interesting law;
Ottawa: Children under the age of 5 must not be locked in a refrigerator.

A bus for two stops seems daft and im trying to keep active, dont want no more snow or i may just scream and St Rads is always bottom of getting any help seems ok if people dont live up here for their hospital appointments but stupid when i just live up the road yet risk life and limb getting there this is one unhappy heavily pregnant girl who relies on buckland hospital for like said serious tests. end of .

Mel while a bus for two stops "seems daft" these are exceptional circumstances for you and for the weather, in these circumstances you have to make the best of a poor situation and ensure life goes on in the safest way possible.

So you would rather keep moaning on here than catch a bus to keep a hospital appointment that you say is so very important.

Curious; anyone on here actually cleared the path outside their house? (aside those who physically can't). There is such a negative attitude in the UK, never mind the Council, never mind paying those out of work to do it. So what if no one else does it, at least you have the pride of knowing you did your bit and just outside your house everyone will know it was you that did it. Be more positive people this is a perhaps once a year exercise.

The solution is simple really isn't it. Next time it snows everyone grab a shovel and clear the snow in front of your property, and if you've got elderly or disabled neighbours do theirs as well. It would only take a few minutes. It's pointless moaning because the council or highways won't do it, they're never going to clear all residential pavements and I certainly don't expect them to. There are some things you just have to do for yourself.

seeing mel's comments and going by ray's report from k.c.c. roads near hospitals are not on the priority list.
medical centres and doctor's surgeries are though which seems odd.

Helen, we cleared a path through the snow outside ours and from around our cars so we could get out later and our neighbour did the same- and it all went on our front lawn.
About 10 residents of one hill near us spent two hours on Sunday clearing the whole road so they could get to work Monday. But on the other hand I have seen quite a few instances of people clearing a path from their gate to the kerb but just piling the snow to the side so pedestrians have two mini snow mountains to walk over!

I was outside last night clearing the ice - it is still drifting and turning to ice - very little the authorities can do about it and I would't expect them too.
Outside work is still very snowy and the paths cover, people just need to wear sensible footwear and look where they are going !
Back to the 'good ole days' what happened 20/30/40 years ago, did the councils turn Kent into a complete blanket of grid or did people grin and bear it, and clear their own bits?
