  It was a rough oul night Howard too...very strong gusts of howling wind and waves literally thundering against the seafront wall. Believe it or not it had calmed down by the time you took the shots above..very nice pix, capture the mood.

  Not just in peril on the sea, either. We spent a week in a cruiser on the Caledonian Canal recently, and some of the roughest water I've ever experienced was on Loch Ness. We only experienced 4 - 5 ft waves, but the staff at the boatyard told us that 9 ft waves are not uncommon on Loch Ness......OMG, I wouldn't fancy that at all! The ones we experienced were bad enough, sufficient to have us scuttle into Urquhart Bay harbour for 24 hours!

  Yes I've seen some lake water on the Shannon very choppy too but perhaps not quite as bad as that Andy. Bet that was an eye opener.
  The pictures on the STORM thread from Ed showing the difficulties experienced by the ferries was jaw dropping.
  I searched back and found this 'perilous' picture dating from 2007..havent used it before but weather almost identical to today. Coupled with the Lifeboat story, Ed's ferry pictures, and the current rough weather.. it all reminds us of the perils of being out there.

  i remember that day all the forecasts were for incredibly high tides along our part of the coast causing problems, didn't materialise - though it couldn't have been much fun out at sea.

  Big waves, big ship Neil. I am surprised you only lost one container. Is the grounded ship the one that went ashore on the Kiwi coast last year ?.
  Here is my old ship, the Manchester Vanguard stuck in the ice in the St. Lawrence river about six hours from Montreal in1958. The ice came early that year and we were stuck for about ten days before the icebreakers cut us free. Should have been home for Christmas but spent it in dry dock in Baltimore repairing ice damage. I took the photo.

  32 containers lost over the wall and a further 100 were just bits of metal on a wooden flat with all cargo gone. The vessel aground was back in 2005 in the Azores, the picture was taken during the first attempted salvage and refloat that I was overseeing as company representative and emergency response lead for CP Ships.
