Although people, especially the politicans and people who are not in need. However, I would really enjoy starting up one of these in Dover, being part of this.
Reasons are various, I was talking to members of the homeless etc in Dover. They are very clued up as to where and what the resources are. The supermarkets have huge mountains of waste, and many throw liquids like bleach etc, on perfectly good food, so access cannot be made, seems ludicrous to me.
I know many pensioners and young families who are seriously struggling. Surely, there would be no shame, in collating these out of date food products, and thunnelling it all into good use.
Because, of keeping up appearances many people are embarrased to admit they cannot manage etc.
Any ideas on this, and how it could be started etc....Happy for anyone to e-mail me direct, ofcourse..
Thank you....

I know a number of 'Freegans' and much spoiling goes on. There is a little more on Freeganism...

Foodbanks seem to rely upon information from official sources as to who should be catered for in this way.
The major player, and one possible source of information is...

From the previous thread...
The nearest one to Dover at the moment (and which is itself only now under development) is in Ashford...

Food banks would not be allowed to distribute out of date food.
The food would need to be within the use-by date, and this date would have to be clearly marked.
The food would have to be "still fresh".
But yes, food banks have started spreading over the past year or two.

Tell the homeless to stop taking drugs and spend the money on food.

people are classified as in need of a food bank by social services, not homeless people just those struggling to make ends meet.

Well thats all of us then Howard, everybody I know has seen a drop in living standards in the last few years.
Castle Street is full of addicts wondering around, I'll bet a penny to a pound they'll be queueing up for feee food as well as the free drugs we give them. They're probably the ones on the other thread about litter everywhere.

you're mixing things up here david.
a) the druggies/drinkers are not homeless.
b) at the last count there were 3 homeless people in dover.
c) if they were homeless, where would they cook the food?
d) it is not a queue up and get hand out service but for those referred by agencies and is limited to 3 uses at this time.

People are given housing and enough money to feed themselves, if they choose to spend that money on other things thats their choice.
If somebody wants to set up a food bank as a charity its a laudable exercise, but they're only encouraging irresponsible behaviour.

David I think you are being very hard on those who need to use a food bank. Some will be those who do not know how to budget properly but most will be those who are really struggling to make ends meet through no fault of their own.
As I understand it most of the food is donated by supermarkets etc.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Jan, if supermarkets want to hand out food thats fine by me, if volunteers have the time to get involved likewise.
These people queueing up for food will have colour tvs, new trainers etc, I have sympathy for the needy, not the greedy.

# 5,7,9,and 11....lack compassion and understanding and jumps on the easy and convenient bandwagon, for `some`,
to target the `few`and condemn the many needy.

Is there such a thing as a Black & White TV licence these days?
You are dead right though David, if people did not have a TV, or access to commercial radio, and did not send their children to school, they would know nothing of the rapacious nature of the market place.
Perhaps it is time to undo the land closure acts and return the feckless to the smallholdings of the forebears?
A return also to the idea of a 'midden' at the end of the street and do away with refuse collection and the airy-fairy notions of municipal recycling.
Farewell washing machines and central heating, farewell too to the nascent Video-Game Industry and bring back Hunting with dogs, well cared for, warmly housed, richly fed dogs, naturally.

How dare people have "colour TV's" ! they have been out for years now and may have no value at all, but probably people having hard times should not be watching them should they

Why am I a hard man Howard?
I work hard, employ people, pay tax, work in the community voluntarily, I don't have a criminal record.
I'm sick and tired of people believing they are entitled to live off the state.
As for the dig about the blues, I have never posted anything on here in support of them, I dont know why you'd suggest I'm suited to them.

I'll take your word for it Howard as I have zero interest in a party conference.
The fact is some will work and others will expect to be given things, we're in a situation where we have too many of the latter.

Who was it that was in charge of Education since the war (WWII, not any recent 'squirmish')?
Who was that over saw the struggle to rebuild?
Who was it that manufactured the decline in Industry?
Who was it that advocated the use of cheap labour overseas so as to increase profits in the much reduced home-market for the same goods we used to make for ourselves and others?
Who was it that foresaw the rise in prosperity through 'service' jobs, and then sent those same service jobs overseas?
Who was it that thought it a good idea to replace the home-grown workforce with a cheaper variety through untrammelled immigration?
Exactly the same people who moan today!
We have gone from a Nation of makers to a Nation of shoppers...who can no longer afford to shop.
Some; who were never involved in mineral extraction and/or manufacturing continued to do well, and became complacent. Yet, as those who outlay a far greater proportion of the money they have in tax are driven to accept less and less so the small businesses that rely upon their spending shall wither and die.

Howard #2, food banks are discussed on the Labour candidate for Deal and Dover thread, now on page 2. Clair Hawkins said she is supporting churches and community groups on starting a food bank in Deal.
Christine, perhaps you could contact Clair re a food bank for Dover. She is a very helpful and capable young lady, so take a look at this thread. It's very sad that we now have a need for food banks in Britian, there are many families struggling to put food on the table and that's a fact we simply cannot ignore.
