Whoops. Just noticed that Scotchie started a thread about this back on 12th July.

    Better change the subject quick.

Got distracted by spending the afternoon reading through a mass of newspaper clippings kindly given to me by Sylvia in the Hospice Shop. Her husband cut them out of the Dover Express in 1979 and they are a reprint in over 170 parts of the whole of Bavington Jones "Dover. A perambulation of the town, port, and fortress." I have the book but the articles have additional pictures and extended captions which are quite fascinating.

As usual, one weeps over all that has been lost. The history of Dover is one of continuous demolition. What a town this would be if the best of the old could have been retained alongside the new. People had little interest in that in past centuries unfortunately and it is still something we have to guard against today.
