20:5494379had a quick google vic(washed my hands afterwards though), ernest tranter came up as born in 1918 lived in portsmouth and was a former teacher and athlete who passed away last year.
hope that ms arnold has more luck, rather tragic that there was such a battle so close to the armistice.

23:4294676That must have been the Battle of Amiens, which started 8 August 1918, involving large numbers of British, Australian, Canadian and French soldiers. It went on to the end of August.
At the outset, the British had 500 tanks, but within days, almost all of these were out of action.
50.000 German soldiers were taken prisoner by 27 August 1918 during the Battle of Amiens, and the allies regained territory that had been lost earlier in the same year.
Just one tip: if nothing comes up under Ernst, may-be the name was Ernest.

My family tree shows an Ernest Tranter born 1893 in Birmingham but no further details after that. I can only summise he would have served in the First World War but have no evidence of this.
