    WAKE-UP CALL TO HERITAGE CRIMES

    English Heritage Calls on Communities to Help Tackle Heritage Crime

    Crimes and anti-social behaviour that damage England's historic environment will for the first time be tackled in a much more coordinated way through a new initiative launched by English Heritage on Friday 11 February 2011.

    Western Heights, a huge fortification atop the White Cliffs in Dover that was first built to defend the country against Napoleon, has suffered from repeated acts of theft, vandalism and graffiti and has been on the Heritage at Risk Register for many years. Due to the enormity and remoteness of the site and the ongoing problem of anti social behaviour in the area, it has been difficult to effectively secure it.

    But the situation is slowly improving due to concerted efforts by English Heritage, Kent Police, Dover District Council, the Western Heights Preservation Society, and the White Cliffs Countryside Partnership - a good example of the kind of locally coordinated efforts that the new initiative hopes to spread across the country.
