Well put Tom.
The only thing that concerns me with your analogy is that underneath the oversized foam suit, anyone can do the job of the mascot. The signifier and signified are perhaps not even relevant.
....oh...err, wait a second!?

70 pence a year each seems an absolute bargain to me.
Report here on the benefit they bring to the economy.

the thread seems to have moved onto the monarchy/republican issue, when it is actually about the prince of wales getting a grant when everybody else is getting theirs cut.

So why don't you say what the grant was for then Howard?
Have others who qualify for that particular grant had theirs cut then?
Come on, if you want to debate that then you have to provide some details so we can evaluate them.

Now, now Barry.
If you can boast of a rise in exports without saying just what is being exported, others too can make thier points in broad strokes.
At times you appear to consider yourself above others, Barry. Very unappealing.

you will have to ask the b.b.c barry, the accounts from the prince only show "grants" not what for.
the princes office does not elaborate which make things look worse.

Hear hear.
Does Charles le prince de Valise also receive EU benefits?
Perhaps a Google search might reveal what grants and benefits he gets.

As a republican, I would be glad to see the back of the royals etc. However one has to recognise that much of what these people receive both from the Civil List and government and EU grants would be sought anyway as it relates to the upkeep of important state properties or the management of rural and farm land or the rural environment. It is disingenuous of the BBC and others to attack these grants without clearly understanding what their use is and who else might be receiving them. The vast majority of the information regarding agricultural and environmental grants is freely available on the internet.

Firstly some of you should remember that BarryW is "in the trade" because of which he knows what he's talking about. The few on here who think they know better just argue with unsubstantiated ramblings that have no basis in fact.
I notice also that several times Barry has asked these people to enlarge on what they have said with facts, these have not been forthcoming.
If the estates that Prince Charles owns were owned by someone else, someone not in the public eye, what then?
Those who knock the royal family seem to forget all they do for tourism, charity and relationships with other countries. They work bloody hard for this country. The recent diamond jubilee showed just how loved our queen is, oh to have her energy now let alone if I reach her age!
Maybe some who bitch are just jealous?
There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

the issue is about grants being taken by the prince of wales, nothing to do with the subject of monarchy against republicanism.
i would imagine the younger royals would have been more realistic and turned down the dosh.
prince charles has done little during his life other than make ill informed criticisms of other professions and trades without ever holding down a job himself.

Bitching about determinism Jacqui?
In actual fact, I often feel sorry for the Royal Family, they have no choice.

mmm I see this has moved on since I last looked in.
Ross - very well said. Though you and I disagree on a number of subjects including the monarchy you at least do not try to 'hang' your views on spurious and half-baked points as others do on this forum.
Jaqui, thank you - spot on.
Howard - why should the PoW not take advantage of what is available to all in his position as landowners? You would have a much more sensible and valid discussion if you focused on what the grants are for and whether they should be made available at all to anybody. You never know I might even come down on the side of getting rid of some of them.

I saw on a TV report that some of the extra money was to cover the costs of the Royal Wedding and his sons Royal engagements abroad, air flights etc, that the Prince of Wales had to pay for out of his budget.

jan;
please, he paid for it out of our budget given to him.
anyway, i think howard is trying to make a very different point to the way the thread is heading, so maybe leave that wider debate for a seperate thread
