Is there nowhere else that the balloting can take place other than in schools? the disruption for parents in arranging child care is an expense many cannot afford, my grandsons school are having a day club that day for £32 a child, more than a lot of Mums earn in a day. A marquee in the grounds would be perfectly adequate for the vote surely? it is not as though there will be any more than a trickle throughout the day.

From a 'pdf' obtainable from the page linked to below, concerning Polling problem in 2010, the full report is to be published next month...
"Availability and suitability of buildings for use as polling places
3.52
At present, the Rules only provide that (Acting) Returning Officers may use certain publicly-funded schools or "rooms funded out of any rate" free of charge as premises for polling stations . This means that although there may be other fully accessible premises which would make an ideal polling station, (Acting) Returning Officers have no legal right to ensure they are able to use these premises. it does seem a bit out-dated closing entire schools when only the school hall is required.

Maybe we could use local churches.

good thinking, most of them could use a little extra revenue.

Good one Lesley.
Exactly Howard, I have never been able to understand why the whole school is closed after all it is only one small area that is used. Adding to the list of suitable buildings what about empty shops.

Does anyone believe there will be a majority turnout? I don't.
If there was a reason to vote, it'd be OK using schools, but for this?

Alexander if you had to loose a days pay to look after your children I think you would not be happy with schools closing even if it meant 100% turnout, it really is time that alternative to closing a school was found.
The majority of parents now work even if it is only part-time so there is nobody at home to look after them children. Years ago working mothers were in a minority but if needed there were grandparents or other family members around, now they also work or live to far away.

I don't oppose in principle the idea of using other buildings for voting, but most churches have been "converted" or pulled down, so that's a no-brainer to start with!

Village halls and Churches cause minimum disruption, that is the way to go. The closing of schools for a day has to stop, life has changed.
