18:0975925we discussed on here a while back about dover district having an elected mayor.
swale council here in the garden of england sent out 127,000 questionnaires asking their citizens whether they thought it would be a wizard prang to have one.
they were besieged by 13 replies, 9 for and 4 against.
looks like a bit of a non starter.

18:5675943don't think that is the issue keith, elected mayors are more important in major cities and large towns.
the mayor has to be charismatic for example london has had ken livingstone and boris johnson, middlesborough had that ex copper with attitude, ray mallon.
does dover have such a figure?
sit down vic!!

20:0975959i think you have missed the point alan, our present mayor and others before her perform a ceremonial role, working with voluntary organisations, local community events and small businesses trying to get going.
an elected mayor has a budget and powers that enable him or her to control the police, transport system, housing and other serious things.

20:2575963no wonder i am confused!!
Lol.. so an elected one would have more power.. but surely thats a bad idea.. yet another loop to jump through for the groups, effectively tying up more time and money.

21:2475965Thankyou Howard, I always wondered what our mayors actually did

. Do they still have to do their normal councillor work as well.
If we had an elected mayor they would more or less perform the same duties as the council leader of the party in power do now. So a single elected person would decide the budgets rather than the majority party. Has this old lady got the principle right.

22:0575974something like that jan, our present mayor of dover is chosen by the ruling party on the town council.
the idea of an elected mayor in a town of our size is frankly ludicrous.

22:1675978I agree, Howard. Sue is a lovely lady but I am sure she would not want the responsibility of executive power such as you described above in post #6. Can't speak for some of her Labour colleagues, though......

22:5276000Our Mayor is a working one with her own work as a ward Cllr on top of her job as Mayor she goes to some 200+ events each year and heads all the full town council meetings and has the casting vote on any town council committee she is also works with the Town clark on staffing matters. so yes she is a very hard working mayor.
