Yes it is Paul - thank you.
If Dover was a destination, rather than (in the majority of cases) a to-it-and-through-it Town, we could/would be so much better off.

Maybe using the DTIZ area as an overnight caravan park with a few facilities might encourage some travellers to stay and spend in Dover plus it may take away the unsightly summer turnout of the motor homes parking free along the seafront doing their morning ablutions.

Yes thats a very interesting report. Dont have time to go through it all in detail but it seems there is a slight increase in visitors since the last survey in 2006. Foreign visitors have fallen away somewhat but domestic visitors have increased making up the shortfall, the domestic market increased mainly due to the falling value of the pound abroad, one assumes.
Dover still has quite paltry tourism levels in relation to what it could be, given the right development.
Marek no need to do that with DTIZ..caravanners already do that big scale along the seafront every night. Presumably waiting for more economic floor space on the ferries. A virtual village appears on summer nights. They dont spend anything in the town. They come with their own food, drink their own wine, watch their own televisions, park overnight for free and then clear off as dawn breaks.

that is what marek is referring to, i think.
it does rile me that they get away with it like that, surely they should put more parking restrictions on vehicles over a certain size.
alternatively a reasonable fee.
I cannot understand why a system such as operates for boats on the Norfolk Broads cannot be started, whereby if you moor up for the night you have to pay.
Some nights there have been as many as 60 motor homes parked on the seafront, and an average of 20-30 is usual throughout the summer season. This winter there has often been the odd one parked (they are probably warmer down there than we have been up here in The Gateway!).
Any money raised could go towards improving the tourism potential of Dover.

there was quite a few foriegn regersted cars parked around town this morning while i was town,as far away as germany, holland, belguim.
Howard,
Do stop being such a petulant child. Why on earth should the sight of tourist's caravans parked along the sea front rile you?? And just what exactly are they "getting away with" that you find so offensive??
I would have thought it would have been in the towns interest to encourage caravaners to park along the sea front. The alternative does not bear thinking about I.E. the St James area. I would not encourage rats to enter such an eye sore. I shall remind you that the sea front does not belong to Dover, it belongs to the government through its proxy of Dover harbour board. or had you forgotten that minor fact?? Which raises the question, just why does every body who comes to Dover have to be screwed for cash?? lets face it the amount raised would hardly compensate the town for the lost business rates which the charity shops skilfully avoid.

How many times must I say charity shops DO pay rates but at a lower level as a result we do not get ANY of our rubbish collected so have to make alternative arrangements.
Howard is right

, if anything your post reads a bit like a "petulant child". Dover sea front should not be treated as a caravan park unless they pay a reasonable fee for the privilege.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Jan,
By your logic if caravaners pay a fee then it is alright for the sea front to be used as a car park???
"Please explain" You cant have it both ways.
You have neatly skipped my question "Why do we have to charge for everything?? hardly encourages visitors does it??

I tend to agree with Jimmy, that caravans are parked along the seafront because people want to see Dover and the Sea.
The caravanners pay petrol tax to travel here, so the State Treasury gains on that.
What Gov. does with the money is another matter.

To explain the obvious, to get some money, simple.

And to pulverise some of it away!
However, caravanning is a leasure that means people do not have to stay in hotels, and can bring their supplies of provisions with them.

exactly alex, they pay for overnight facilities in parks why not the seafront?
incidentally they do not park there just for the sea views, they are doing so because it is free while they wait for the cheaper night crossing.
Howard,
Can one assume you are one of those rare breed of philanthropists who makes a point of going out of your way to make sure you pay for everything in life?? who frown on freebies, who do not look for alternatives to paying for parking, never knowingly avoid paying taxes?? I Bet you are!!
Jan,
you can state the obvious about charity shops and rates as many times as you like, feel free. It wont change my opinion that they (charity shops) or in Dovers case "Quality shopping" are cheating the town of much needed revenue. They dont get there rubbish taken away simply because they sell it!!
Cheating the town of revenue? Get a grip! People spend time and money in the charity shops, and if they weren't there they would be empty and run down anyway, and no rates would be gained at all. What an odd view of things you have. Your aggressive distaste for people seems to have obscured your view. Why need to attack Howard and accuse him of God-knows-what in relation to taxes and freebies because he has an alternative view to your own. Have you considered anger management?
Bern,
Yes have considered anger management, but give up on the idea as it made me angry.
Am I to assume that I am not allowed to express an opinion, irrespective of the fact I am using my hard won freedom of speech.
I only asked some simple questions which you and people of the same opinion were unable to answer.
Nothing to do with aggression .
You miss my point entirely with regards charity shops,I am not be-crying what they do I only wish that there were better alternatives so that I no longer have to travel to Westwood, Canterbury, Ashford for quality shops (even Paul Watkins prefers to shop elsewhere) cant say better than that.

your attempts at attention seeking do you no credit.
if you cannot post without trying to insult fellow members then you are missing the point of this being a club.
