The Hotel development at the St James development was given planning permission at last night's DDC Planning Committee as was the redevelopment of the QuarterDeck site at Deal.

Excellent news, Paul. Looks like the pieces of the DTIZ jigsaw are now coming together. Fingers crossed that the next hotel development to get approval will be a five star hotel and conference centre on the Western Heights! That has enormous potential to attract new trade to the town.

a good one to start the day, there was a lot of arguments about what should happen to the quarterdeck.
what will it resurface as?

Howard,
the Quartedeck plans (well, the architect drawings that I saw in the local paper) look very impressive - sea view flats with shops on ground floor.
Is the Dover hotel the same one 'slammed' by town councillors as being 'not in keeping with the area and not distinctive for the town'? (quotes from Dover Mercury)

sounds good enough mark, there was talk of it becoming a cinema if i remember correctly.
the new hotel in dover is one and the same.

No Howard that was the old bingo hall/cinema that had plans to be made back into a cinema. Be interested to know how that plan is going as it has all gone quiet, but I still see people going in and out of the place.
Re the DTIZ hotel - I cannot see the 'not in keeping' excuses when you look at what is already in the area - Gateway Flats, Burlington House, empty multi-story, derelict sites.... whatever will be there BRING IT ON !!!!

coming back to me now, there is much to be done to the old regent/regency building to bring it up to scratch.

A more striking/imposing/impressive design would have been appropriate for the main arterial road to and from the European mainland but, as with most others, I am so glad that something is happening I am prepared to settle for the bog standard.
I can't help feel that an opportunity HAS been missed here.

We could always keep hanging on forever for that 'opportunity' - the problem was this is it....... as you say Mark, lets settle for the bog standard because even so it is a lot better than what we have now....

#15, with less nimbyism and £20 million more, there would have been better opportunities. I'm sure that in 1180 there were people objecting about building Dover Castle.

At least the castle is a 'statement' - it might not be "welcome to Dover" but it's loud and proud!!

With a bit of luck, the hotel on Western Heights could be the 'statement' building that will be symbolic of Dover's "world class" ambitions.
