this has been discussed on here before but meridian carried a piece on this last evening suggesting that liverpool could cream off a lot of cruise business from dover.
as per usual david is fighting east kent's corner claiming that e.u. money is being used unlawfully by liverpool.
normal merseyside shot here with the liver building in the background and the scousers maintain that everything is above boards, however this has overtones of the p & o/sea france dispute and we know who won.

This has been brewing for quite a time. I remember reading of it for the first time towards the end of last year in the shipping press. David Foley, Charlie Elphicke and others have been making determined representations to Govt about it. I think that the Minister has ordered that a proportion of the money be repaid over time, need to read his full statement when I get a minute or two.

If there is a Dover based 'talking-head' perhaps somebody will post a link to it, but here is the Minister and the Leader of Liverpool Council talking their talk...

Seeing as a lot of people on cruise liners tend to do trips into London, isn't Liverpool a bit far away ??
Been nice knowing you :)

i suppose liverpool would have to expand their heritage museum to encourage cruise visitors.
my understanding is that the current artefacts comprise a set of bolt cutters, a massive key ring, a set of bricks for putting cars up on and a vintage collection of giro slips.

I take it that Mickey Mouse is cockney rhyming slang for scouse Howard - good one.
I would hope that Liverpool are not allowed PoC cruise calls as it must dilute the number of cruise ships that call into Dover - mustn't it ?

You have obviously never been to Liverpool, it's a throbbing nightlife city with shops restaurants and good travel links, and they have been regenerating this city for years
Dover will have to steep up its game big time to compete with this one,
But I am afraid the present incompetent pampered individuals running the planning and regeneration of Dover just don't cut it.

the city centre is thriving with plenty to see and do, another tour would be that of anfield.
many of todays cruise passengers are from germany and italy and would like a look behind the scenes there.

Still big unemployment there Brian, same as in Dover.
But it doesn't get away from the fact they have invested millions in Liverpool,
Boat passengers are unlikely to just drive past as in Dover.

I agree KeithB that Dover needs to up its game, but would not agree that planning and regeneration officers are incompetant - far from it, they are always in meetings with developers and regional bodies, making sure that Dover is open for businsses and the Council will, where ever possible, be pro-active and supportive.
Any delays in projects coming to fruition, are not the fault of DDC - the officers of the planning or regeneration departments, nor Councillors either.

"Any delays in projects coming to fruition, are not the fault of DDC - the officers of the planning or regeneration departments, nor Councillors either."
I know plans can change when they are still at the planning stage but I find the above statement very sweeping and unlikely, the DDC etc are not perfect.
