00:0787984Well It's booked at last . A public meeting to promote the formation of a local support association and input from potential assistance at committee/trustee level. The initial purpose of the support group will be to raise the cash that will run the campaign to rescue and restore the classic car ferry TS' Dover'.
The location-the historic Kings Hall, 287 London Rd, Dover on Tuesday 8th February 2011 -19.00hrs for a19.30hrs start.
There will be a presentation and Q&A section and I guess refreshments-in all a couple of hours of your time-please spread the word and come along of course. Obviously I will be organising local newspaper pre coverage. I've no doubt that the meeting's agenda will develop as we approach the date and I will keep you all posted.
Never give up...

08:3988123Thought I'd bring this to the top again as it's worth a look to see what is planned and how they hope to raise the money.
I shall certainly go along.

00:4488302Colin-hope you can make it.Whip round? Sounds ok to me! Everyone take a look at Paul's link. It's to Ray Goodfellow's excellent web site 'Dover Ferry Photos'-there you will find a complete history of 'Dover' right up to 2006(and every other ferry crossing the channel). Her last few years in service were blighted by engine problems-I've no doubt that's something we will inherit in the rectification dept. I've been in touch with Ray about having access to some of those wonderful photos from the Thornton collection for the campaign publicity and merchandise.
Pledges of support have been coming in from several directions. I very glad to say that Dover Chamber of Commerce at their board meeting earlier this week pledged to support the efforts of the Dover Steamship Company in saving our Ferry. Terry Nunn has kindly offered to do the PA f.o.c-thanks Terry.

15:4491969I hope it all goes well tonight.
I have passed my apologies to Richard, I am having to do some work tonight thanks to an unplanned important meeting tomorrow morning cropping up.
The Chamber of Commerce is fully supportive of this project.

15:5691972I should think that would be more than enough Richard. I'll pop along, if you need a hand with chairs, just drop me a line on this forum and I'll come up a little earlier.

22:3892018The meeting seemed to go quite well. I'm not qualified to adjudicate on it's success or not, that's up to Richard. Perhaps our latest Forumite, the former seafarer Les Richmond could offer his view.
As well as Les there were a number of other notable people there, The Town Mayor Cllr Sue Jones, Neil Wiggins, he of the Peoples Port, David Foley of the CofC and another Forumite Pat Sherratt.
Actually, Pat sat next to a lady we shall seeing a lot more of in the coming months. I'll leave you guessing.
Sorry about the quality of the pictures, I borrowed Howard's Box Brownie.

Yes it is the new Town Clerk (Allison Burton) but of course Mike still has a few weeks before retirement.
I thought Richard may have posted and therefore to say where things stand.
Certainly ambitious project that Richard put a price of £14million, but initially to bring the ship to a port in Kent would be around £200k
Many "technical" questions asked on the engineering and general ship condition.
Even if the initial £200k raised certainly, at present, it would seem she would not come direct to Dover as DHB charges very high.
