I suppose if one is motivated towards channel swimming it isn't hard to find, but to attract passing touristy-type people who might be interested, or indeed us ordinary folk who don't really care about the channel swimming but wouldn't mind supporting it a bit for the sake of Dover it might be nice to have a bit more publicity.

Yes I agree Bern
Many of the local Pubs, cafes, shops put ads in a Dover guide published this year - I know it was made available at the cruise terminal and at the tourist office - this certainly drummed up some trade for a number of the local pubs.
What we need to do is continue to work with these people to produce a bigger better version next year and make sure it is not only available at the locations mentioned, but also at the station, at St Pancras, at Charing Cross, Victoria, every hotel and guest house in Dover district etc etc etc

My daughter-in-law used to run an information bureau in Oxfordshire that had a whole section of tourist information leaflets from all over the country.
When I last visited her there last summer the only information on the shelf from Dover was to do with the ferries, there was absolutely nothing to stimulate tourists to visit the DDC area at all.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Many years ago when I was the Chairman of the Dover Guest House Association, we had our own glossy colour leaflet and I used to send it to as many TIC's around the country as we could afford - it did work too.
I inquired about doing a similar exercise when I produced the Discover Dover leaflet in 2009 and 2010, as I was promoting the historic sites and attractions, local businesses and the accommodation sector too, but it was simply too expensive, so didn't do it.
Manston Airport would have taken them as well as Edinburgh and Belfast Airports too.
Bern, who exactly do you mean by local reps ?

our intrepid septeguenarian(sic) is just a few hours away from reaching civilisation, failing that france.
all proceeds from his sponsorship will go towards vital equipment that would detect breast and testicular cancer.
this just leaves vic to do the crossing now.

ALL;
A few years ago i tried to get some publicity by putting on the sea front all those dovorians who had swam the channel a small board with moveable names.
D.H.B. showed little interest, the 2 swimming organisations tried to protect themselves by clamming up and wouldnt advise known dover swimmers.
after talking with nterested bodies and D.H.B. It was clear interest wasn't there that was a shame it would have been another good cheap way to promote dover
so i gave up.
many small projects like these take off then people give up through frustration which is such a shame

Roger yes he's made it. Broke the record as the odest swimmer ever age 70. Did it in 17 hours and 51 minutes according to the BBC.

Your last sentence Keith also applies to medium sized projects too and quite often big ones; they all could have made a difference.

ROGER;
You are correct, and its such a shame, even the little projects could make such a difference, and with this come medium and bigger projects.
but theres such a no go negative attitude, no wonder people just sit back, frustrated and dont bother

Thanks PaulB.
That is some achievement, Congratulations to him. He must have been a very fit 70 year old.
I agree Keith, there does seem to be a "NO CAN DO" attitude on too many things. I have been banging my head on the proverbial brick-wall for years. Not so much now though.

sound like a good idea from keith there, why are there two channel swimming associations and why do they come across as so insular?

HOWARD;
When i took that venture on you would not believe the secrecy, i thought i was talking to the freemasons(or maybe i was lol)
because it wasnt there idea they wouldnt share info i even said i would say it was there idea if there only after publicity.
but it was so negative from those 2 groups and D.H.B. that thought well lets move on to something that will be achieved.
frustrating i know

Bloody Hell - such negativity! I appreciate - especially as someone who has dealt with multiple bureaucracies over the years - the frustrations, but I am not clear why individuals poor experiences (which many people share, actually) should be allowed to hinder and drag down new initiatives and enthusiasm. My job entails battling and cheering my way through several layers of bureaucracy at once, meeting negativity, jobsworthiness, reams and reams of paperwork and ego-based wrangling all in combination with levels of ineptitude that would cause vertigo. But that doesn't cause me to stop doing it, or to try to stop others being enthused - quite the opposite actually! For my money real leaders, leaders who affect change and growth, are the ones who cheer on the go-getters and the enthused, support the ideas, take a punt on new thoughts. Of course we get dis-spirited and down hearted but it isn't in the failure that we show our strengths it is in how we manage those failures. So think on and look sharp!!!!
