13:4088778Just a quick update to let you know how we're doing. Our radio studios are now coming along and we are hoping to have an online stream on our website by the end of February. Depending on circumstances we maybe testing for a while before programming begins.
I have started getting ideas for programming and thought I would ask anyone reading this what they would like from an online community radio station. We will at first be on air for limited periods in the evenings and weekends (with a sustaining service at other times) and aim to increase programming over time.
So far we have decided our music policy will be from the 1950s - today with the same emphasis placed on unsigned/local acts as well known names - as we are a community station we want to put as much emphasis on local music as we can. We will like some other radio stations also be broadcasting album tracks to widen our music library (and as these can be as good as and sometimes better than those released!). We are also aiming to cover as wider genres and possible and would like to have a 1930/40s programme on a Sunday afternoon reflecting memories of Dover in wartime.
Other ideas include review shows, country shows, a news style and magazine programme but basically I am asking you what you would like from your community online radio station. Any suggestions would be welcomed.
By the way our next meeting is Monday 24th January 7pm at the Phoenix Club, Crabble Road, Dover (so please come along and see whats happening!). We also hope to have a stand at this years Film Festival.
If anyone wishes to come down and get involved as presenters, editors, office staff, promotions people etc, etc I am sure we can find a role for you and we would be really happy to hear from you.
PS if anyone has any radio equipment which works they wish to dispose of (e.g. microphones, headphones, seperate CD players, mixing desks, etc) we would be happy to take them of you if you wished to donate them. Also if anyone has any CD's they wish to dispose of fitting the eras/genres above please do let us know as we would gladly like them for our record library.

19:1388807A weekly spot were are councilors can be given the chance to say what is happening in and around Dover and were locals can ask them what they are doing to help getting this town moving again. Travel News is also a good one to keep up with.

19:4888817Gossipy news items where possible like the information that we get on the forum.
For example why was a fire engine with siren going charging through Dover when the local ones were still in Ladywell at about 2.00pm.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

20:3588829What an exciting project! Will there be room for "magazine" programmes highlighting local events and issues (without the political local authority slant) - chat and reviews etc? I love the idea of a 1930s/40s show reflecting our history. Fab!

08:3889018Although I'm a Councillor, I wouldn't be too keen on listening to a local politics chat show on local radio - we have enough on here.
Terry, I spoke briefly to the C.E. at LSBC and he is happy to give a radio interview about what is going on there and thinks perhaps there may be the possiblility of accommodating you somewhere.
I'll send an email to you (and him) over the weekend, with his contact details on.
Good Luck.

13:0289258Terry, be careful with agreeing the proposed interviews and regular spots from the Labour people, you may be in danger of having your station becoming a spouting point for the local Labour Party for propaganda purposes. If you are to do this, you should have equivalent views from the Conservatives. As a fairly apolitical person, I would have no interest in tuning in if the station becomes hijacked by one side or another, but may consider listening if the coverage is balanced. Better still, it remains politics free.

13:0989260I agree Phil. I think it is best that politics stay on the forum and in the newspapers if need to.
We will of course have interviews with people from the councils on the station and promote what they do however it won't have a political input. So far we have had some interviews from people who work for these organisations promoting at events and with one councillor from DTC but it was specific to the work they were doing at the time for 'FairTrade Dover' at the Regatta.
Politics in my opinion should stay out of it...there is a very vague area to cover there especially with the rules with regards to politics and the media so no politics in that capacity I am afraid. I am quite happy to have shows presented by councillors however although they will not be allowed to do anything of a political nature...if they do then the show will be dropped. I have known a few people on here for some time who are councillors/ex councillors (from hospital radio for instance where politics was never discussed). I trust them not to speak about politics on air, otherwise if they did it would cause concern for the station.
And yes Phil coverage should always be balanced - being the same as you I have no intention of the station becoming used for such purposes. It is to promote Dover and to be a training ground not be a political broadcast (thanks for the advice).

13:2189261Crabble Folk Club is on at the mill on the last Friday of the month, unless there are clashes with other events.
It is being relaunched this month with a new organiser as Crabble Corn Mill Acoustic Music Night, there is always lots of local talent performing and many of them would welcome a radio spot.

13:4189262Terry I never mentioned Politics I was an ex DJ and unlike some people have a life outside of Politics but if it seems to be a problem then thats ok,just thought I might have an input with my 1970'S Dover Greeters Walking Dover Live and even railways, but I can see where Phil is coming from, just imagine Barry on there talking about Politics as well, although he may be good to talk to as a financial expert.

13:4489263a tricky balancing act for terry there, people want to hear what well known local people have to say, that would naturally include councillors. i would think most could be trusted to keep the party stuff out of it.
local bands, singers and general up and coming entertainers would be interesting to most.

14:0589266Ah there's no problem at all there John. Thats what I did try to say, sorry if it came across wrong. Not a problem you doing a show and I need to ring you to arrange that - I think it would be really good.
Exactly! We can have you on there about what you have listed but try and keep politics to a minimum. I think a councillors chat might be a good idea as well just not too lengthy and only one a week/month and with varied councillors. The problems exist as the media are not allowed to be bias (and we wouldn't want to be), plus that we don't wish to be a pushing political ideas.
If it is about Dover then fine to an extent but I would rather keep it simple. Also any politics pieces can be recorded therefore if there is a problem with them not broadcast, but it is a very fine balancing act. However what you suggested John is absolutely fine. And the same would be for any other party wishing to do a show as long as it is not a political show.
John I very much look forward to you and Keef's in put (as I said I knew Keith from the hospital radio as well - never had politics on there). Yes we can have politicians but without the politics! And plus that we can do interviews with any politician and keep it varied and not bias. But I don't wish for the station to become a political overkill in anyway. We just need to be careful.
