Is it rumour or is it true, I've heard that the Silver Screen is closing at the end of March, due to it changing to digital, I believe funding is in place to convert, but some of the regulars that go on a Thursday morning are worried they will not reopen again, because of the proposed coming of the new complex, which if the case we might have to wait and wait and wait, and once again be without a cinema

I understand it is the end of February Sheila and it is because new movies being released, are digital and to remain open, the Silver-Screen needs to be to show digitalised films.
They have applied for funding, but until that funding is forthcoming and the digital equipment is operational, they can't show new movies - they can show old ones of course, but everyone (?) wants to watch new ones.
I do understand they have a good following, so hope they will get that funding in a timely manner.

I hope it stays open.I,ve been there several times and its a good friendly little cinema.Theres not many were you can still buy a cup of tea in a proper mug but you can here. The refreshment prices are reasonable unlike the rip-off prices you would pay in some of the bigger multiscreen places.

I was lead to understand by my daughter who used to be a manager at the Ashford cinema complex, that the cinema only took 3% of the ticket price, the rest going to the distributors. I used to get free entry to the films, and I would take my own 'refreshment' (water) to save paying the rip off prices. If you're taking your children or grandchildren to a multiplex, treat them to a bag of sweets and a can of drink on the way there, costs you less and the children get a better choice,

the matinees are well attended and the films are in the old format - do we know how much money they need to operate the new system?
the new complex is not really a threat for reasons mentioned here.

Yes, I hope they get the money, It's good to have a cinema in Dover & one as Andy says, 'you can buy a cup of tea'. In all of the multiplexes it costs more for decent refreshments than the tickets
I too know a lot of Dovorians who regularly go on Thursday mornings so they will be sad to lose that facility.
However, If we are getting a multiplex in the long awaited DTIZ development then I guess it will inevitably be the demise of the much loved Silver Screen.

it would have to be either or both of our councils that come up with a share of the money and they would come under fire for financing a private enterprise when cutting services.
even if there was a loan made available it would take years, if ever, to pay back from ticket sales in such a small cinema.

Very true Howard, plus if either council were to help the cinema surely they would be duty bound to help any business that needed new equipment.

And so closing of its doors, means another back step for Dover, what hope have we, they knew the changes were coming so why has it not been altered and the funds raised earlier

I doubt it was laziness Brian, maybe a bit of mis-judgement. It would probably have been better if funding had been applied for a couple of years ago. Digital has been inevitable.

judging by the sign outside they are very optimistic, using "when" rather an "if".

Perhaps they could get funds from our big lottery grant, it is something for the town and its people, we need to keep some entertainment going, if we don't all we'll have for entertainment is the drinkers shouting out their jovial comments as you go past

it would be up to the owners to approach "big local" and put their case, they may have done this already.

Shame the money for the TV could not have been invested in the Silver Screen!

no chance of that lesley otherwise every struggling business would want a helping of taxpayers money, besides this issue has only come to light recently.

surprising news on the ddc website, our cuddly, caring, compassionate council have approved funding for the projector that will keep the silver screen going long into the future..
this will delight many especially the people that enjoy the thursday daytime classic film show.
