Howard -
spelling in old records becomes 'non standard' prior to about 1850, remembering most people could not write or even write their name, did not know how their name was written.
Here are more apprentice enrolments:
John Rogers JOHNSON aged 13 yrs and upwards with consent of father Wm JOHNSON of Dover labr by Ind 3 Apr 1843 appr to Charles Richard HAMBROOK of Dover Pipemaker for 7 years ..... £5 fee from Thomas PAPILLON charity of 1701 paid on advice and consent of the mayor..... payment weekly in the first 2 years, the sum of 3 shillings provided the apprentice makes weekly 12 gross of pipes and during 3rd and 4th years 4 shillings for 16 gross per week... after the 4th year half journeyman's wages provided he makes 18 gross of pipes... Inr 23 June 1843.
Wm Laurence MEAD son of John MEAD of Dover labr appr to Edward KNOCKER and Edward Newman KNOCKER of Dover attorneys at law and solicitors to learn the art of a writer from 6 Jul then last for 7 years. Ind dated 30 Sep 1854.. Inr 6.8.1861.
