07:4974397BERN;
'm afraid I don't agree with you with regard to the above lady, she is a well respected lady both in her constituency and on tv with m portillo.
She comes from the left of the party so wll be a breath of fresh air.
I think she will liven up some of the meetings.
One of the few characters left in politics
sadly

07:5174398An odd choice indeed. One can understand for example the non-economic Alan Johnson as Shadow Chancellor as it has one eye on populism but this choice is bewildering. Here we have one of the most unpopular women about..even though Guzzler likes her in his post above.
She finished last in the Leadership contest. Hugely last. Then she could not muster enough votes from her fellow Labourites to be voted onto the original shadow cabinet grouping...all this despite regular tv appearances on This Week and so on. Where she had for years the awful knack of looking at the ceiling while speaking. Strewth! I kept trying to see what she found so intriguing on the ceiling! So in essence she isnt a good tv performer.
I dont get it...it cant be the bolster up the female content of the Shadow group because Labour proudly has a great group of women.
So there we are...an odd choice.

Cor tis unusual we don't agree to be sure lol
Dianne has a hugh TV following, and is well respected in her constituency.
Remember the labour party has moved a long way from its clause 4 lefty days
Ed's playing a good card here,
like blair did with prescott, get the popular mp to the public in your team.
I think, as I say she will liven up some of the drab meetings.
think it's a very wise choice

08:0374401let's not forget her racist remarks about blond blue eyed finnish nurses and how black mothers care more about their childrens education than their white counterparts.
then we have the question of hypocricy, she criticised harriet harman for having her children privately educated then done the same thing with hers.

08:0674402lol!

Keef no Im not with you on this one. Diane Abbott often came across as anti-Labour during the Blair and Brown years on that miserable TV programme... which struck me as supremely disloyal. Okay she wasnt a Blairite, fair enough, but knocking your own partry while it is in power was unforgiveable especially as it was that Party that put her where she is.
Okay the new brooms have come in but once again D Abbott is from the old era, not a bright new brain or face for the times.
In some ways she reminds me of that other awful Labour person Hazel 'Im rocking the boat' Blears. How her constituency re-selected her gawd alone knows.
I acknowledge Abbott gets re-elected time after time by her constituency but her appeal doesnt spread any further afield than that.

08:0874403HOWARD;
All can say is she remains popular in her constituency, and continues to be asked back for her weekly spot on TV.
We see many on this forum shoot off from the hp sometimes without thinking.
Politics is a funny old game,
Who would of thought we would see the day when labour MP's
Hutton and F Fields would be advising cameron
or likewse Blair had a few tories advising him.
It is modern politics so I keep being told

09:1174404Sorry - Abbot talks total rubbish, demonstrates with each sentence her lack of grasp on the real world and staggering lack of imagination, and it is excruciating to watch her try to hold her own in any proper debate. Only one question: what was he thinking?!

10:0774416so Bern she is little different from 75% of all politicians and 90% of the public - seems to make her an ideal choice

Sadly a lot of what you say s correct no characters in politics, or not many.
PAULB;
D Abbott wanted the party to go in a different direction, for years now all the parties no longer want dssenting voices, which i find to be a great shame, and hasn't helped to promote that politics can be fun, and affects everyones life

17:2774442i never found out what direction she wanted the party to go, i got the impression she just wanted to appear a maverick so that her constituents would think she was doing something.
during the leadership campaign her one argument was that she was the only woman on the list.
i never remember david blunkett campaigning on his blindness.
maybe long john silver should have stood using his 50% leg deficit?

20:3974461exactly bern , she would have left the reds shouting slogans from the sidelines.
the blues took a while to suss out that they had to be electable, chossing cuddly man of the people dave to win power.
they were clever enough to forget their roots.
