Like some other members of the public I am off to the town hall to take part in a debate on the EU going out on Radio five, why did they aske me,?the only thing I can think of is some years ago I was at a big UKIP meeting and I had to give my views out on radio five so they might still have my name on their records.

This forum gets more like Mrs Dales Diary everyday.
I shall not be wearing a hat and will not be watching or listening to anymore debates on the vote 23 rd June.
Forgot to mention my aches and pains in hands and legs .

So how did you get an invitation to this event?
My, don't "the great and the good" of Dover jealously guard their little bit of influence?
Never mind if you have an opinion and a way to articulate it, it's who you know and how high up the greasy pole you have slithered in some cabal or other that counts, doesn't it?
Try getting on board one of their little vessels and you will be made to feel about as welcome as a Syrian refugee in a capsizing boat. I am not going to be silenced and I am not going to go away. Sorry.

Good post, Andrew, and from what I can see looking in from outside a well reasoned opinion. The town seems to be run , now and in the past, by albeit well meaning people, by mostly unqualified and inexperienced bunch holding back the town's progress.
Being part of a town council is a hugely important position and you'd think processes were in place to weed out those who are incapable of reaching a professional enough standard to be able to hold such office.

This whole thread might be more interesting after this secret debate, but that is only if you have not already decided how you will vote.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Paul M, you are right, but it is not just an appearance, it is reality.
I think these people want to help the town and do some good but I feel some are at least as interested in bigging themselves up as helping Dover, if not more so. People who want to to get involved and help are blocked and belittled in case they might get a bit of the glory.

As I said I do not know why I was asked ,I think just they had my name already but I have just left we was asked to put our hand up and they would come round with the mic ,but after 90mins with my hand up then I put my stick up then put my hat on the stick ,I was told you will be next but that did not happen Ha Ha. But they did have a good cross section of the public of Dover and even that I did not have my say some very good points were made by the public, but being at the back with my hearing not at its best I missed some of it ,and a few were shouting at each other and that did not help matters. But when I was younger I would be one shouting but to old for that now.It is still going on but I left. Not much I can add apart from a free cupper and a bun which was nice,

It was not about Dover it was about the EU in or out. There must have been about 100 that were asked. As for some of your views above they are rubbish .

Looks like they missed out on your snippets of wisdom Vic.....their loss as I'm sure they got it wrong.
As for some of the above views being considered rubbish by you, I suppose with tolerance in short supply and looking up with your back on the canvass must throw up a different light on proceedings.

Referring to Paul's post about the Town Council in 9 at present their only statutory responsibility is allotments as far as I know, that said with the precept they set could make a real difference in the town. Because of their secretive nature the townspeople distrust them totally and at times they seem to go out of their way to court controversy.

It's all about power, Howard.
I think it's about time that invitations to these debates, like many aspects of life in the town, were conducted in a more transparent and democratic way.
How about a ballots for these events? Who is i/c the invitations?

I assume that it is just the BBC that send out invitations, usually for "Question Time" they invite local political parties and special interest groups to apply.
