23:0076320I have said this before that the D.D.C are very good in helping to be a Prospective Councillor what ever party you are in,+they do more than most councils.
I have already in front of me all the help I need for next years locals, you can have the same by just phoning them and asking for it.
I can tell you that there is Prospective Councillor Evening on Wednesday, 10th of November at 1800hrs till 2030hrs.The evening will provide potential candidates with the opportunity to hear about, and aske questions on, the work of the District Councillors and the council. I have been to many over the years and they are very good and if you are going to stand then you need to go to that meeting. You can Stand for District and town and parish all at the same time, and yes that is what I hope to do, i will be standing for District at River,For Maxton and Folkstone Rd for Town, and the River Parish Council if my legs will let me.If you would like to go to that meeting phone the DDC book your place and I have room for 3 in my car and will pick you up if the need be.

23:3976331If one doesn't go to that meeting, can one still stand for a ward?

Yes you dont have to go to the meeting, you still can stand, but it's a helpful to tool to get to know what the councillor role is all about.
If anyone is serous in standing I think to add to exp[erience it would be a good idea to shadow a councillor till May.
The officers at the council can only give you an insight into how the council works up at Whitfield.
The ward work is an add on to this and a big one at that!!!!
Im sure there are many cllrs out there that would happily shadow new comers to May.,
VIC;
I think you realy do need to make up your mind, having announced to all your retirement and getting everyone's good wishes, we now see a change of heart, thats fine, but people will see through that.
Your health also you should consider first.
on the wards themselves
To be honest
RIVER Sues so popular she will win that seat very very easily
(of course it's your rght to stand)_
Could humbly remind you Prory/maxton and Elms vale consists of more
than the Folkestone Road and Maxton, and as your unaware of that s probably came bottom of the candidates last time, this is a clear signal from the electorate of that ward.
But of course it's your right to stand
On River parish council I don't know the number of vacancies nor do i know the number of candidates.
All in all Vic as iv said for some time you can do just as much outside of the council as you can siitting on it.
Your health/family should be top priority
I know your hearts in the right place
Just trying to give advice
As I say at the end of the day it's your decision

08:1976344This part of a "blind" circular email I sent round a short while ago - if anyone would like to be added to my email address groups, please do let me know - the emails are always sent out blind, so no one can receive any scam or spam from them. The greater number of people I send them to, the greater number of people know what's going on and as regards those on local business news, the businesses benefit too.
"Dover District Council will be holding a Prospective Councillor Evening on Wednesday, 10 November 2010 at the Council offices from 6.00pm to 8.30pm. The aim of the event is to provide members of the public with the opportunity to hear about and ask questions on, the work of Councillors and the Council, in order to understand better, what life as a District Councillor is like.
Practical information on the nomination process will also be available. The Chief Executive and other officers will talk about a range of topics, including the electoral process, local government finance, the structure and composition of the Council, the role and responsibilities of Councillors, etc.
The programme plus background material, are in the throes of development, but will be available on the website shortly.
If you might be interested in this event, please do let Kate Batty-Smith at DDC know. Places must be booked in advance by telephoning or e-mailing her on 01304 872303 or email at

12:0576363Shame my theme on shadowng wasn't pcked up on.
It can be quite a nervy time in the chamber for the first time, more so the first time a councillor gets up to speak.
Shadowing a councillor would help with this, but also get candidates knowing what to expect both inside and outsde of the chamber

13:2376370Thanks Keith, but I reckon I know how the Council functions, for, if they decide to do something against the democratic will of the people, then they'll go ahead and do it, and ''there is nothing you can do about it''!
No thankyou, Keith!

You misunderstand me, I'm no longer a councillor(thankfully)
so if you wanted to shadow some one it would be one of the others that would have to come forward.
You win some and you lose some in the chamber, but ts for you to decide.
All I would say and i'm sure those still serving as cllrs would agree, to be an effective cllr you need to commit a lot of time.
With this family lfe can suffer
as can your social life
but there are loads of plus's

15:2576395Keith, I wasn't referring to you in a negative way, and wouldn't know who to shadow, nor what shadowing means. I wouldn't live in London even if I was paid to do so, but I would dedicate all my time to Dover!

15:4176403Alexander;
Being A District councillor won't take you away from Dover Distrct(don't confuse it with the MP)
I feel to be a good and effective councillor It's useful to get as much information as you can, and the officers day will help in some way towards this.
Shadowing is just following an existing councillor around till May whilst on council duties not only in the chamber but also in the community.
I always remember a toryu cllr who was up to b e chair of the council 25 years ago telling me as I stood for the first time, that as the two of us were the most popular in the ward we would be elected then told me his plans, I stopped him and said, first I need to get elected, then once elected (if i get in) I would be happy to speak with him.
Thankfully I got top vote
and sadly for the conservative he lost, so his plans, and becoming chair of council never happened.
I recall on swearing in the chief exec said to me, he couldn't understand how the conservative lost he was the leading light in the chamber.
I told the chief exec, at the end of the day you can be a fantastic speaker in the chamber, but it's the people that elect you.
I never take any on e for granted.

15:5276407Your correct Paulw
another example of candidates taking the electorate for granted was the castle ward election some years ago.
my mum put up as paper candidate in the safest tory ward
I asked durng the 4 week campaign the tory canddates why they not been out on the doorstep, they told me they dont need to they will re elect them any way.
my mums won by 2 votes!!!!!
just shows sometimes it can be the person that wins elections
As I believe Sue nicholas shows in River

16:0176409i suspect that as has been said previously the council elections next may will depend on how popular the coalition's spending or not programme is with the electorate, give or take a few personal votes for popular coincillors.

16:0776411I know, Keith, that to be in the Council here would not imply living in London, which is also why I like the idea. I have to build up a set of proposals to attract people's interest, and have done so months back. In due course, I'' start making them known to the public, so people will know what opportunities to choose from.
