To me this is begining to have the hallmarks of a manufactured "event",If you take Into account the make up of the H1N1 virus which contains elements of Avian and Swine and Human strains.I have had It explained to me as such"This is rather astonishing to realize, because for this to have been a natural combination of viral fragments, it means an infected bird from North America would have had to infect pigs in Europe, then be re-infected by those some pigs with an unlikely cross-species mutation that allowed the bird to carry it again, then that bird would have had to fly to Asia and infected pigs there, and those Asian pigs then mutated the virus once again (while preserving the European swine and bird flu elements) to become human transmittable, and then a human would have had to catch that virus from the Asian pigs -- in Mexico! -- and spread it to others. (This isn't the only explanation of how it could have happened, but it is one scenario that gives you an idea of the complexity of such a thing happening).

I do believe John that this particular virus is a desendant of the one in 1918 and has mutated in the form we have today. The main concern is that the vaccine being created will be effective against this particular strain but should it become more virulent in the Winter the vaccine could become less effective. This would mean that those who have already had the mild form could also contract the more virulent mutation.
Tamiflu is not a vaccine it is a treatment which assists in easing the symptoms and an aid to a swifter recovery.
There is little doubt that this outbreak is serious and not containable. My Wife will be working from 8.0pm - 8.0am next week at one of the collection centres situated at K&C Hospital a measure which in the many years she has worked for the NHS she has not encountered before.

How is Briony now Collette?
You said she turned the corner on Friday so hopefully she'll be a lot better by now.
Would it be possible for you or Briony to describe for us how she felt from the outset and how the virus progressed and when you realised what was wrong with her? I only ask because I'm sure there are a lot of people getting cold or flu-like symptoms who are worrying if they have swine flu or just normal flu or a cold. I know I've been worried after getting a bad throat on Wednesday but it seems to have cleared up now. Normally I wouldn't have worried though and I wonder how many others are in the same boat.
Anyway I hope BB is fine now and enjoys her summer.

interesting point jacqui, we all get edgy when people cough or sneeze near us in a shop.
First, I hope Briony is feeling betterI don't know her, but nevertheless I wish her well.
Secondly, I think we are getting swine flu a bit out of proportion! I had a case of flu a couple of months ago, felt lousy, had to go to bed for a day (I don't "do" sick so it was annoying) and then got up and went back to work, did the ironing, washing, washing up, cleaning, gardening, in other words, life resumed. I didn't think "it's swine flu I am about to die", I just had flu and got over it. Most of us will, whether it is swine flu or not. Horrible for a while, then better. Sympathies to anyone who has it, but sometimes the fear is worse than the event.

Very happy to report that Briony is heaps better now
Interesting posts above with regard to swine flu or not swine flu. Well I didn't know how to identify it either until BB got it, then believe me I knew. I have never seen her so sick before. Started with horrendous headache and sore throat, then sweating ,very high temperature, gastroenteritis and practically unable to move. I would describe it as very bad flu symptoms multiplied by 10 or even more.
Must say I was worried when Saskia started to feel unwell on thursday/ friday, with bad headache, sore throat and a temperature, she couldn't go out on friday night to celebrate end of school and thats saying something! She stayed in bed all day saturday not feeling well at all but is now feeling a good bit better so thats good news
Looks like things are almost back to normal now whatever normal is!
Colette, I am glad. Good luck to you all.

Just heard from my brother-in-law that the Fourth Engineer on his ship has been taken to hospital with swine flu. He works for the Hong Kong container ship company OOCL so everybody else onboard is Chinese.
They had all just joined a newbuilding in Korea. The Koreans took their temperatures on arrival and also made a note of their mobile phone numbers.
Would imagine that swine flu could spread very quickly through the small crew on a boxboat. Would not like to think what would happen if the ship were in the middle of the Pacific at the time.
On his last ship they were not allowed shore leave due to the possibility of contracting swine flu on a voyage from the Far East to Italy then the East Coast of the USA and return, and were ready to mutiny!
