09:3383773Didnt the cloak and dagger boys at MI5 recently warn us about the horrors of cyber attacks from terrorists. It was the new threat they said... it could bring down western economies and scupper our defence systems and what have you.
But now suddenly we see what they meant, we see it in action in support of Wikileaks. Yesterday various capitalist structures running through our daily lives were affected by a fringe loony group in support of Wikileaks...Paypal, Mastercard, Amazon, Visa, have all been attacked and at various points throughout yesterday these businesses were brought to a halt. This affects all of us not just the companies flagged up.
Surely this is cyber terrorism yet we all seem to be taking quite a light view of it all. But should we take a light view of it all? Its the beginning of something new and deadly...isnt it?.

10:0683775certainly is a cause for concern paul, i would imagine that the companies mentioned above have the most stringent and expensive systems to counter these attacks.
what would happen if the cyber terrorists attacked our utility companies or even power stations?

12:0983793i think you are right brian, at this time it is just a protest, the main point is that they have the capability of carrying out terrorist acts.

13:3383803There was a program about this sort of thing a while back I think - more damage could be done to the country than any bomb could - the country could almost be brought to a standstill by bombarding websites with traffic causing them to crash.
Suddenly Die Hard 4.0 doesn't seem to unrealistic !!
Been nice knowing you :)

11:1583896Paul in answer to your question - no not really
Anonymous made it abundantly clear that they would do this, if it is anything it is a cyber skirmish as so called "patriot" hackers are also doing the same to the Anonymous web forums and botnet

17:3184227I can't see state authorities around the world taking it lightly and allowing people to perpertrate attacks on the Web. Freedon of information is respected in our Country and in many others, we don't need anyone trying to assert their private institutions by holding the Web to ransom.

18:3784249i doubt that many governments are able to stop all attacks, this is the downside of the new technology.
the russians are clued up on this, most of their big secret discussions are not put in writing.

00:0184292Do you really think that governments are not already doing this sort of thing?
Please be serious - FOI is a sop for the masses and low level administrative stuff - the real secrets stay that way unless someone blows the whistle or some muppet from the MoD or HO or Cabinet leaves their breifcase/laptop on the train

13:2784539the word on the street now is that hackers are targeting our governments website next.
one of the aims is to attack the benefits pay out system, meaning that claimants would not recieve any money until the problem was resolved.

Does that mean they are welcome also to infect your computer with viruses which will at best mean a big bill for repairs or a new computer, at worst you will infect many others? Just asking.
