Fascinating. The only word I had a problem with was "aulaclty". That makes me wonder if maybe consonents are also key in this, not just first and last letter. Eg "cluod" is obvious, because the sounds are there, so is "rdanieg" and "awlyas"
Any thoughts from shorthand writers?

I see what you mean, hey this is great, but wait a minute, it only works with anagrams.

Shorthand just because eg Pitman's, the outlines rely on the consonant sounds, so as you and Bob will know, when reading it back you fill in the dots in the words (almost literally, for the vowels!). Eg a word like "dog" would be represented by the signs for the consonantal sounds of "d.g".
So the words "phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid" above are just "ph.n.m.n.l p.w.r of the h.m.n m.nd" ie ignore the vowels and it becomes much easier to read. Not all the words are in consonantal order, but most of them are, it seemed to me.
I tend to read by word shapes ... I see varying heights of spikes ... church towers and fields ..

I haven't managed to make cats or dogs tails out of this.

Spell checker made me realise how I incorrectly spelt a couple of words - for years!

Interestingly it appears that the ancient egyptians omitted vowels from their writings.
And I don't care what anyone says, it drives me mad to see incorrect spelling and bad grammar. But that is just little old pedantic me.

Same here Diana, especially on official documents, websites and posters. I'm afraid I belong to the secret apostrophe police. Oooops, my secret's out now!

Kath I would like to think they go around deleting misplaced apostrophes, eg from possessive pronouns, greengrocers' apple's, pear's etc and adding apostrophes where necessary. Have a look at

In years past I used to be a proof reader and as old habits die hard I would constantly correct letters, reports etc.

That's what Bob still does, having spent years correcting reports for the paper!
