Oh, how could I have forgotten Ted Heath? Certainly the worst Tory PM in history, possibly the worst of any party, and the man who shackled us to the European political project while telling us all it was just a free trade agreement.

I totally agree with that Peter though not the 'any Party' bit - that accolade must go to Brown, the biggest disaster to hit Britain since the Black Death.

As with the 'world' of the Practical Joke;the pepper chewing gum, the blackening soap and the eye-glass that leaves a ring of carbon upon the face etc. We are free to chase and cry out after the joker.
The Joke Shop though cannot be blameless. Which brings us back to Thatcher and the disastrous Big Bang.
The taking of people out of the process began there, and ever greater numbers of people are being written out of any part in the play.
Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.

On a lighter note me `oul` Bassa.....# 20...strange you should say that as with so many of your postings,my immediate
reaction is similar to Gary C`s....why bother...but then on a similar level of puerility to your postings I have the urge to
reply ... ``my dads bigger than your dad...with nobs on..7 trillion times...so there....i`m not listening any more............``
....but I shall resist....
..now you have a nice day..thinking nice thoughts.....

Hum. I accept that each person on Barry's list has merits to be recognised in one field or another, but........heroes? No way. A hero put his or her life on the line for others, some on a daily basis, and some voluntarily. This list is not about heroism at all, it's about turning people into icons - and that can be said of those on this list. Not popular, but possibly iconic.
The use of the term 'heroes' in this instance actually cheapens those who really are heroes - those in our Armed Forces, Lifeboatmen, Police Officers, Firefighters and Paramedics.

Andy.
You are missing the point.
These are BarryW's Heroes, quite different from the general populace.
Which of course he is entitled to and it would have been a good thread, had it been posted for its own merits and not just to provoke us unwashed.

Brian.....Post #21.......
People with views not in line with your are not ignorant, just different. How would it be if we all agreed with your brainwashed Europhile views?

Clearly several people have not even bothered to read the original post properly and reflect that in their posts.
1/ For the second time Gary - this is not my list, it was composed by Stephen Parkinson of the Conservative History Group. I have posted it here to generate some discussion. Which is not helped by misrepresenting what this is about.
2/ Andy - I made the same points as you in my original post regarding heroes. These are people, in the most part, who I admire for their contribution to our country, but I also queried the term hero. Of those named I would suggest only the Duke of Wellington and, possibly Churchill truly deserve the hero label.
Those who denigrate and spread anti-Conservative hatred, making ridiculous claims about what the Party is all about should note the achievements of those named who include the first woman PM, the first Jewish PM, not named was the first woman MP, not named was the first Grammar school PM (not a man to admire that one). Then there are important social reforms that include:
abolishing slavery
catholic emancipation
policing
care for the insane
child labour reforms and protection
womens suffrage
social mobility
Introducing:
grammar schools, boosting social mobility by doing so
unemployment benefit
paid holidays
Read the post properly and you will see that there is a great and proud history of service to this country. This only touches the surface.

BarryW.
Read your own post, properly.
"There is just one bit I would differ with - John Major, - not my favourite leader on the Conservative Party at all".
That means you agree with all the rest.
"What is important these are great figures and what they have achieved for this country"
No miss-interpretation there then?
Below are statements taken from other people (not mine) from
http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080718141754AA6F9Eq.
Voters views on Margaret Thatcher
Sold off all the council houses so that working class families can't get decent housing these days and are forced to rent from Slumlords at high prices
Sold off the Utility Companies to Private owners so that now pensioners freeze to death in winter because they can't afford the expensive fuel prices charged by these profit-hungry monstrosity companies.
Stopped free school milk
Poll Tax/Council Tax (making everyone pay a huge chunk of their income to the Local Authority in Tax with no regard as to their ability to pay this)
Decimated our Heavy Industries costing millions of jobs - at the height of her power there were 3 million unemployed!!
Destroyed the Trade Unions, robbing the working man of the right to stand up for himself.
Turned this country from a place where people lived in strong communities with a sense of culture and heritage into a capitalist hellhole where everyone is laden with debt, morals and tradition has gone to the dogs and no one gives a sh*t about each other and only cares about credit cards and consumer crap.
Maggie is the reason this country is in such a mess today. Evil horrible woman, she's hated by everyone except the businessmen who made money under her.
Ended the change of people gathering together and protesting against authority. She destroyed bodies of people who could mass together and threaten power.
She destroyed the ship builders, steel workers, coal miners and the trade unions. Divide and conquer was the plan, open up the boarders and encourage racial and cultural conflict. We have become too busy fighting amongst ourselves now to bother about the government sha--ing us left, right and centre.
I'm for copy/paste.

Another quote from the same page but further down...........
"Maggie had more balls than all the PMs since.".........
Very true, whether you like what she did or not and please none of the usual comments that include 'her balls-up'. they are not new after all this time.

OK the GaryC...
To follow your lead. #32....
=======Sold off all the council houses so that working class families can't get decent housing these days and are forced to rent from Slumlords at high prices========
Extended home ownership to millions who previously thought they would never be able to own their own home.
========Sold off the Utility Companies to Private owners so that now pensioners freeze to death in winter because they can't afford the expensive fuel prices charged by these profit-hungry monstrosity companies.========
Extended equity ownership of businesses to the masses. Turned state liabilities delivering appalling service at a high cost into tax-paying and profitable companies. The world market determine prices ultimately whether nationalised or not.
========Stopped free school milk==========
That old chestnut, I agree - more important related failure of hers was education. She did not manage to break it free from the left wing educational cabal that has so damaged it for decades.
=========Poll Tax/Council Tax (making everyone pay a huge chunk of their income to the Local Authority in Tax with no regard as to their ability to pay this)=========
An good concept (I actually chaired a think tank that advocated such a change in the very early 80's...) but one that was poorly introduced and strangled by the beaurocrats dooming it to failure.
=========Decimated our Heavy Industries costing millions of jobs - at the height of her power there were 3 million unemployed!!==========
Hah - you have this the wrong way round. She had to end the unsustainable subsidies that doomed many British industries that served only to hide unemployment and damaged the economy. These subsidies had to end and it was a brave and right thing to do and was essential to rescue the economy from being the sick man of Europe. That unemployement was caused by those subsidies in industries largely plagued by militant trade unions.
===========Destroyed the Trade Unions, robbing the working man of the right to stand up for himself.=======
Tamed the extremists and bullies of the Unions and gave control to the members. In so doing reduced strikes and brought people back to the real world.
==========Turned this country from a place where people lived in strong communities with a sense of culture and heritage into a capitalist hellhole where everyone is laden with debt, morals and tradition has gone to the dogs and no one gives a sh*t about each other and only cares about credit cards and consumer crap.=========
Shook off a socialist hellhole with an economy going down the drain to the status of Albania. Rebuilt the economy based on enterprise and economic freedom, restoring prosperity and generating more employment at a time when many women were coming onto the employment market for the first time. Ending up with record number in work. Advocated thrift and savings, living within your means as befits the daughter of a middle class grocer.
=======Maggie is the reason this country is in such a mess today. Evil horrible woman, she's hated by everyone except the businessmen who made money under her.=====
A wonderful lady, the greatest Prime Minister of the 20th century who achieved a massive turn-around in the UK. The bile and hatred directed at her by the Unions, Labour supporters and other left winger are a measure of what a great and successful leader she was. We need her like again./
==========Ended the change of people gathering together and protesting against authority. She destroyed bodies of people who could mass together and threaten power.========
Only in your imagination. Perhaps it is the realisation from these people that it is not a matter of them and us any more and society is what they make of it through the conduct of their own lives taking personal responsibility.
=======She destroyed the ship builders, steel workers, coal miners and the trade unions. Divide and conquer was the plan, open up the boarders and encourage racial and cultural conflict. We have become too busy fighting amongst ourselves now to bother about the government sha--ing us left, right and centre.======
Ship-builders, steel fabrication, coal mines all destroyed by subsidy and trade union extremism. Stood up for Britain but, one other failure was not pulling us out of the EEC(EU) - when she did speak out she was undermined and brought down by the old-guard of Tory Euro-enthusiasts now thankfully neutered.
There you go Gary - a good try.

My post was in resonse to your claims that I don't read your post and to prove you do not read mine.
Your #32 proves me right on both counts.

BarryW.
I am going to take some good advice that I have been given, to stop responding to your posts.
Your narcissistic replies to me are affecting and deflecting from what I really want to achieve, by being a member of this fine forum. It is also bad for other members as well.
Good luck and best wishes for the future.
