When I hear folks complaining about what children have to put up with in schools, old buildings etc. I think of what WE put up with in our schools.
Old circular coke stoves which made fumes in winter, wasps in summer, and when the stoves didn't work or had to be put out, we sat in our coats AND gloves!
This was at my old grammar school in Lincolnshire - and for three years we had our classes in old army nissen huts at that time. But it was an excellent school, and the skilful teachers maintained good discipline with admirable results. We accepted the conditions.
Bob's old school in Dover - St Martins School in Elms Vale (quoted from the records)
Temporary Log Book C/ES 121/19/3 starts 24 Oct 1941, includes detailed reports of air raids, dates times etc., floods c.1944, 1946,
And conditions in 1947, temperature at 38 degrees in classroom. Lavatory pans contained solid ice, and ink wells frozen up. Freezing again on 28 Feb 1947, ink wells and toilets. One lavatory for use of 300 children!

Absolutely correct.
Look at the Ramsgate School. I was round there the other month. Stupendous design at great expense but still crap results.
(rather aptly, looking at the pupils, renamed after a man who got stabbed io death in a pub brawl !)

did not ramsgate school hit the headlines some years back for being one the lesser of our seats of learning?
if so maybe they should in install or bob as the chief educationist there.
mind you, hoping for the demise of the pupils during the hols may not be deemed a plus on his cv.
My Dad (at the risk of getting a little Python-esque) walked six miles there and six miles back over the Irish mountains to get to school, Summer and Winter - and in the Winter he had to feed the pigs with turnips on the way! And it was just a small one storey building which used to be a barn.

for the record whilst i have my serious head on
i went to';
St pauls primary school anyone remember/attend that one?
then st richards(formerly st urserla's all girls school, but amalgamated with st pauls when st pauls close
and finally st edmunds
all roman candle schools
St Martin's was not much better in the 50's. I still remember with horror the stench in the boys' toilets (no, I didn't visit them but you had to go past!). And oh, the ghastliness of school milk We didn't have stoves to sit round, but I remember that you were always wet all day if it had rained.

have been looking at this thread and cannot see a post from our susan detailing the horrors of her schooldays.
i seem to remember her saying something in the past about having to wade through alligator infested swamps and that was just going to the kitchen.

Diana, myself and my sister`s were at St Martin`s throughout the mid/late 50s. The headmaster at the time I was there was Mr Bertwhistle. (Not sure on spelling). The toilet`s were in the playground and always dirty. School milk, I always had my hand up for a spare.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.
