Children from our local junior schools showcased their talent earlier aided by an excellent conductor, cellist, keyboard players and some boys from Dover grammar school.

Was this in aid of something special?

I think it was just an end of school year thing Jan so that parents got to see how their kids were doing plus the chance for them to work with professional musicians.

I know a lot of those children, I do hope you have the school's permission to post these pictures Howard?

Please remove pictures 2 and 3. Permission was not sought to take them, and permission is not granted to post them. Despite several polite requests, this has not been done and as the father of one of the girls featured I do not wish them to be posted on this forum.

Well, as neither Howard or Chris will remove the pictures, I've had no choice but to lodge a complaint with the Headteacher of St. Mary's. Both of you have been obstructive and unreasonable, I cannot see why you won't comply with a reasonable request, put politely.

Paul, I've explained to you twice by email that I'm happy to remove your daughter from the photos - you just need to tell me which one she is. There's no reason to delete them completely.

There is every reason Chris, because I've asked for them to be deleted. It is not for you to question, you've been asked to delete pictures of minors, taken without permission, your responsibility is to ensure that the request is dealt with. The matter has been passed on to St. Mary's now, a matter which could have been avoided if you had been reasonable.

Forgive my ignorance, but what's wrong with the photos ? What does it matter that there are pics. of young people enjoying themselves at a concert at the Town Hall. Am I missing something ?

Beyond my comprehension too Roger, we have been celebrating the achievements of our youngsters for a few years on here - the more the merrier.

I am glad you posted that Roger as I was thinking exactly the same thing, it is not as though the children were partially dressed or anything, so I am also baffled by Paul's reaction.

Two points to consider here. Photographs taken in a public setting can be freely published (unless the taking of such pictures was specifically prohibited in advance, and such prohibition clearly communicated. On the other hand if a parent objects and asks for them to be removed, I believe the parent's wishes should take precedence. No point in diggin heels in, just delete them as Paul asks, please.

Paul and myself are both photographers so know the rules - it wasn't in a public place like a street but a private event in a hired hall so permission should have been obtained beforehand, if it wasn't obtained and a request is made to remove the pics then that should happen asap.
No need for any reason to be given for wanting them removed or justification in arguing over it, just do it to keep the peace and the website absolutely legal.

Yes indeed, I was not aware whether the event was public or private. Ray is right, take them down asap.

That's fair enough Ray and Peter, but I am asking what's wrong with them - are they perceived to be provocative ? Are we saying that school-sports days can't be photographed, or other events at the Town Hall where young people are involved ? If so why ?
Why would a parent not be proud of their child's achievement and not want other's to see them.
If what you have said is the law, then I think the law is an ass.

In the case of private events, photographs can only be taken or published with the consent of the subjects or, in the case of minors, their parents. As I understand it, that's the interpretation which the courts have placed on the law. In this case, it's up to the parents. Sure there's nothing offensive about these photos except the fact that they were allegedly taken and published without consent. The only difference between these pictures and those of the Duchess of Cambridge with her bikini top off is one of degree.

Roger, there's nothing wrong with the photos (except technically, sorry Howard!

) and I think it was the Education Secretary who said recently that there is nothing in law to stop parents recording their childrens' school events despite what rules teachers and governors try to impose - but that relates to parents photographing their own children for their own use.
I was at St Pancras station recently where filming was taking place for a tv program - there were signs all over saying this was happening and if you didn't want to be filmed then tell someone from the crew if you see cameras and they will keep you out of shot, same rules applying there as should be applied here.
In this case one of the members has asked with good cause for them to be removed and the thread has descended into a discussion about the repercussions not the event, so it would be good manners and stop further controversy to remove it completely.

Roger & Jan. It doesn't matter why I object to them - As a father, I prefer not to have photos of my daughter floating around on a public forum and neither do the parents of her friends. I've even highlighted the children in question to Howard, yet neither he or Chris have actioned that.
It is people like Howard that make my day to day tasks more difficult, the forms I have to fill in, expensive CRB checks, hostility from Police, suspicion from Joe Public, all of which is caused by inconsiderate posting of pictures on the internet.
It was a reasonable request from me and two other sets of parents - please remove the pictures, yet Howard and Chris have been unreasonable and obstructive which leads me to think that they have their own agendas on this.
I will remind you both that these are minors
