Barry even your party spokesman was forced to admit the other night when questioned by Andrew Neil that they currently only had plans to axe Ofcom and intended to institute 3 new quangos, net gain of 2, which even the most innumerate of our electorate can see is an increase being trumpeted as a reduction.

I am actually with those in politics who believe that the proliferation of quangos is bad for politics and that many of these organisations represent little or no real value to the taxpayer and whose roles and responsibilities could be passed back to the relevant department. An example of this would be "The Potato Council" whose activities frankly ought to be carried out partly be DEFRA and partly by a trade body set up and paid for by farmers.

On the other hand I struggle to see the difference in real terms between unelected unaccountable unresponsive bodies and the elected one we have had for the last 30 odd years - other than with the latter we do get the chance once every 4-5 years to replace one bunch of people who only care about the electorate at elections with a different bunch who feel and behave the same way
