Not sure the Coastguard station itself is open, but I believe they are having some sort of event up at the National Trust Langdon Cliffs this weekend.

i suspect that kevin is correct, the last thing the coastguard would want is someone like me twiddling with all the controls while he is dealing with an emergency.

Hi Paul,
Just noticed some discussion about the Coastguard Station Open Day. Yes there is one and it is this Sunday. It isn't their first either as they had one about 5 years ago. It is planned that there will be activity in the air, on the land and on the sea. Gates open between 1000-1600hrs. Expected appearances from Dover lifeboat, Walmer Lifeboat, a Belgian Air Force helicopter, a RAF helicopter and the local Coastguard cliff rescue teams. Other organisations will also be present with stalls, information and demonstrations.
If I get sent a press release I'll send you a copy.
regards
Martin

The Coastguard service is passing through turbulent times. There have been plans to "modernise" it by closing down numerous stations all around the coast resulting in the loss of all local knowledge. After protests from all quarters, there has been a partial U-turn and so far some stations have been reprieved. The amount of money to be saved is very small, particularly when weighed against the potential loss of life amongst the millions using our coasts. The proposals do not affect commercial shipping in any way as ships have comprehensive radio installations. Nor do they affect Dover Coastguard.
Other potentially very serious cuts are the elimination of the four Emergency Towing Vessels stationed around our coasts as an insurance policy against ships being disabled and grounding, with the potential for major oil pollution amongst other things, and the disbandment of the Maritime Incident Response Group (MIRG) supplying trained firefighter teams to assist ships on fire.

good staff telling about what they do , and the emergency services also answering questions
was a minibus that had cruise terminal on transporting people and good to see belgain helicopter
one let down we had a leaflet telling you what was on and only a 1/4 of the displays happened
seems to be the thing in dover
as for turn out of vistors --- not over packed , i always never to see any work mates or people i know from dover at these things --- so is this the thing that local people want ? i hope so
anyone form here go ?

I agree with Ed, the removal of those big tugs just seems reckless to me.
