21:1493558no not like that of course, they are proposing to extend british summer time by another hour.
all sorts of figures are being bandied about but one thing is certain the economy would benefit, tourism chiefs are talking in billions of extra income.
i rather like the idea of longer evenings in the summer, what do others think?

21:2693562This old fuddy duddy is happy as things are thankyou Howard.
I do not see how it will help tourism unless all places of interest stay open an hour longer.
I feel sorry for parents trying to get their children to bed and to sleep, I remember the battle I used to have with my three.

21:2893563We have been down this road before and it did not work then and I feel it would not work now, kids going to school in the dark street lights would have to be left on till late in the morning, working on sites could not start till about 10.00hrs in the morning that would been paying out more overtime to keep the workers on site till late at night, sorry but it would not work out. Lights in schools and the home left on longer cost would go up and up.

21:3293565Vic, I thought Howard was talking about double summer time not the present summer time arrangement all year round that you are talking about.

jan is right here, this is purely about summer time.
i cannot see the point of it being light at 5 am when we could have an extra hour in the evening instead.

21:4993575Again it is all about the site workers Howard you must start on site at first light or even before if you do not geting into and out of London can take up to 3or 4 ex hours on your working day and in costs that is alot of money by the end of the week ,you have to be in london by 0700hrs in the morning and out again by 1630hrs or you have had it. I done it for years mate so I do know what I am talking about.

22:1093584It all depends when you get up Howard

. My daughter often has the early shift at Morrisons starting at 6.00am as she will tomorrow, so prefers getting up when it is light.

08:0593600If it brings us into line with the rest of Europe, then that's about the best reason not to go for it, so I'm against it !

07:2993746Using that argument, we wouldn't be dealing with countries any further than western europe, which is obviously nonsense.

07:3493747roger,gmt is old hat we must keep up with the times.we do a fair bit of trade within europe so why not be on the same time scale.as for the rest of the world i rest my case.

08:2393758Nonsense Brian.
Stonehenge is old hat then in your eyes so we get rid of that, same for Dover Castle.
The time zone changes around Greece (Cyprus is two hours in front), so we're talking about Western Europe only; which part of Europe do we trade most with ? Probably see slightly more Eastern Europe Trucks coming to Britain. I don't think it will make an ounce of difference to our trade with Europe.
My understanding from the radio programs was that it is to save daylight hours so more farming (oop north) can be done and it's thought there's some help with tourism.

11:3793780roger,in answer to your question most of europe.it works well on the continent and has its advantages in it being daylight in the evening which encourages to stay out later and spending money.
stonehenge and dover castle are historic whereas gmt is out dated old hat.

18:2693818Here's a compromise. We go forward half an hour and Europe goes back half an hour. Then we are all on the same time and the arguments for and against are all less valid.
Not a particularly original idea; India and Pakistan have time zones which differ from their neighbours by half an hour. On the other hand, China has just one time zone. This leads to the ridiculous situation where at one border post you have to alter your watch by three and a half hours.
