The Goodwin Sands Potholing Club ought to be contacted, they know where the existing natural chambers are for easy access to the seams but won't be too happy if they're filled in to take the weight of a runway.

I don't dispute that open cast mining could be done( except on the GS) but I just don't think it would be a favoured option.

I like watching the off-shore wind turbines not going round, very picturesque from the east facing hillside coming out of Shepherdswell down to the timber merchants on the old (old) Canterbury road.
The State often comes up with a very expensive theory for Britain's future energy investment.
After a few weeks they try another one out.
