20:1493386In a way the system of week on/week off, or in my case two weeks on/two weeks off, makes little sense. It has been around for a long time now and most people know no different. A Chief Officer said to me the other day "do you know that they used to have four crews for each ship!"
I pointed out to him that we still do. There are the equivalent of two crews living onboard - two Masters, two Chief Engineers, etc, down the line - with one half working twelve hours a day and the other half working the remaining twelve hours. Then there are the equivalent of two crews ashore on leave. It is just that each pair of crews are integrated into one crew so the ship is said to have a total of two crews when it is really the equivalent of four.
The director who initiated this, in a company which no longer runs from Dover, was given a quarter of a million pound bonus, so I am given to believe.

07:3993441As we've seen from these postings, there's many reasons why Dover isn't a vibrant Town (at the moment), from the A20 to the freight-forwarders and from shift work on the ferries to the demise of duty free.
I do believe there is more faith nowadays in Dover, from a business viewpoint, but there needs to be sustainability for it. Regeneration is one answer, but that is a little way down the line; the market could bring in lots of people if handled properly, but if (handled) by the same body as before, there's not much chance of that, so we need to work on reasons why people would/will come here and I keep coming back to tourism and visitors.
It seems to me that the Town itself needs smartening up and other related initiatives and telling the coaching fraternity what we have here to make Dover (District) a destination and vibrant Town once again.
An individual can't do it, it needs a "body" supporting that person to bring it to fruition.

09:1093447roger,regeneration is the bugbear of dover, the local authority seems either not willing or unable to push forward at the moment.once dover in all has been regenerated with a mixture of shops and atractions that remain open all year long then and only then dover can promote its self, but not untill then.

11:1293461I don't agree Brian - not at all.
The work on smartening up the Town should start now - should have started in earnest years ago.
The marketing of Dover should also start now as many/most, coach tour operators work at least a year in advance - same as cruise companies.

11:2193465Just one major point about the market and bringing people into town that would not normally come.
Isn't there a thriving market in Deal on a Saturday, to have a decent market it needs to be on a day that nearby towns do not have theirs.

Ah that'll be the owner of the new premises filling the shelving and starting to dress the window. They sell sand there you know.

We were saying the same thing at work yesterday, as a Limited company is definitely not a charity, would be interesting to see if they are paying business rates on the property...
Also Howard, that charity they claim to be supporting, as per the charity number shown on the sign, is shown as ceasing to exist with the Charity Commission?!

interesting charlotte, coming across as one of those organisations that put bags through the door and offer to collect the next week, hinting that they are a charity but selling them in eastern european shops.

Howard #99, that was my impression when you posted the picture, wonder what the staff are like, from Europe or us oldies who usually staff charity shops.
Seems like further investigation is required, certainly could mislead those thinking it is another ordinary charity shop, 50p a kilo is roughly the going rate for charity shop 'rags'.
