the difference this time might be the fear of public humiliation when the olympic flame is in dover with resulting media coverage and large crowds.

Well if that could be the over-riding reason Howard, all well and good.

Sadly there is only so much money around and not everywhere can thrive.
More and more stuff is being brought online, people cheer when Morrisons/Asda open in town but that can only cause more smaller shops to close down. Every town can't support endless supermarkets and 'Whitefriars' shopping centres
There is only a finite number of pairs of pants and bottles of milk that people need in a town with a fairly static population ......

Been nice knowing you :)

morrisons in particular have brought many people back from shopping at whitfield so it must be a good thing.
the free parking though sometimes stretched does the trick for many.
i went past the charlton centre cafe late morning and they were doing a roaring trade despite the competition from morrisons.

Actually Keith, I'm not sure that is the case. Christmas changes the footfall of many Towns and sometimes particular things happen to change a Town's fortunes - like the Turner in Margate, some tell me that it has changed that Town around and it now has a chance to succeed.
Other Towns and cities are in terminal decline, Dover is no where near that, but it does need help, looking after and moving forward.
Roger
Actually, the Turner didn't just appear, it didn't just "happen". Towns have to make things happen.

Actually Bern I would refine that slightly. It's usually private sector risk capital that makes it happen. All we want councils to do is to let it happen without pettifogging interference.

no private capital involved in the turner gallery as far as i know.
incessant lobbying over many years by the margate civic society managed to get kent county council, the arts council and seeda to stump up the money.
as bern said earlier in the thread "towns have to make something happen".

I agree whole-heartedly and that is why Dover is not realising it's full potential - bcause no one is driving it forward.

Well I had a very successful shopping day in Dover on Wedsnesday, although it was a nightmare to find parking and quite expensive as I had to top up the meter a couple of times. I got all that I wanted in the various shops M&S, Boots, New Look etc and then drove to De Bradlei, got my money back on their parking with spend of over £10 and then on to the Morrison/Asda complex with parking for free. So all in all a good shopping day in Dover Town and even bumped into Mayor Ronnie, Paula Elliot and Big DaveH and had a nice chat

Colettes post really does flag up the actual and potential in Dover. It sounds like a Good Shopping Day (for those who like shopping!!!) Nice one.
