16:3373706Keith - you clearly have demonstrated twice in this thread that you either do not understand what is said or deliberately ignore what is said to make irrelivant comments. I am not being so much personal as pointing out basic problems with your posts and the problems of entering a discussion with you.

Posts 14, 18, 20 show that we are closer than you think on the benefits system.
On your pont, I'm not here just to agree wth you, and fully understand your points.
What you are in danger of is frightenng people off posting which would be a shame.
But far be it from me to say

18:48737301. When people mention grammar it always reminds me of the old joke

Little Jimmy " Gone to bingo Sir"
2. As for the benefit change I welcome it in principle now all we need to do is close up the tax loop holes exploited by the Tory rich and we will save the country far more than the billion pounds of savings forecast by the Govt by implementing the benefit changes.
Please don't cry " they are legal loopholes" they are morally unacceptable.!

19:0873735In this day and age do we really need Child Benefit? Why not increase Social Security payouts or Tax Credits by the same amount and save money that way.

19:1273736More importantly do we all need a state pension? I still pay UK tax on my income - although not required to do so and I have no intention of claiming my state pension. My personal decision.

20:0773748So Marek the tax loophople exploited by the 'Labour Rich' such as Lord Paul are OK then? You and your characterisation of 'tax loopholes exploited by Tory rich' is a sad bit of left wing bigotry.
A lot of utter nonsense is mentioned about so called tax loopholes. For 13 years we have had Brown, year after year, promising to close them and, indeed, taking 'ant-avoidance' after 'anti-avoidence' measures time after time. Yet still we see the left keeping on about collecting billions from closing tax loopholes - its a cop-out nonsense.
Over that time Brown has made the tax codes more and more complex - his speciality has been making everything more complicated and that is exactly the wrong way to deal with it.
The truth is that the best way to deal with this is through simpler and lower taxes - less room to avoid them. That is where we need to go once the deficit problems are sorted.

20:1573751Partly true but over-simplistic BarryW. Tax loopholes exploited by the left and the right need to be darned a bit, and neither left nor right has the moral high ground with this. Clearer guidelines, simpler procedures, and fairer use of the taxes collected - that's the way to go.

20:2073753Bern the whole point is that the use of tax loopholes is not confined to a political party as Marek suggests. What is more Brown has been claiming to do this for 13 years and has in doing so, made tax more complex, creating more avenues to mitigate tax. I would also suggest that tax mitigation is not something only for the rich, I advise many ordinary people how best to mitigate their taxes quite legally.
Simpler lower taxes is the way forward.

20:3973755Whilst I applaud the principle of removing state benefits from those who earn enough that they do not need them; I am concerned about the inequality built into this announcement.
Remember the mantra "the cuts are fair" or some such hogwash from the government...
So how is it fair that a family with a single earner on say £45,000 loses child benefit but
a family where both parents work and earn a combined total of £75,000, but neither exceeds the higher rate tax threshold, keep their child benefit
Clearly this must be fair and equitable
Because the government told all of us that their cuts would be

This has been my point throughout, I think IDS is on the right track, but those that are needy and more help must not be left to wither

22:1673766Case 1
husband earns £39000
wife earns £39000
total income £78000
child benefit payable YES
Case 2
Husband earns £45000
Wife earns £00000
Child benefit payable NO
Again the rich benefit under the Tories and the less well off suffer. Nice one Osborne

22:4073776Maybe they want to tick off all those "middle class" middle income Conservative voters so as to make sure they don't win the next election
