    Interesting quote re: Dr Johnson, Tom. A few points: the woman was talking hypothetically - I am sure not everyone in the 18th century would have left a child to die in the gutter just because it looked a bit sickly. Whether the person in question would have done the same in practice is a matter of conjecture - perhaps it was a figure of speech, said in a moment of exasperation. I wouldn't take such quotes too seriously.

    That is also of a different magnitude from many people ignoring an injured toddler's screams for help.

    And if Dr Johnson had been left to die as a defenceless toddler what a loss to teh English language that would have been.

    It seems the Chinese have chosen the way of "I'm alright Jack, pull up the rope." Some British people aren't much better.
