21:2835661Chinese Railways have just started up their new 245mph train service, with new trains running at an average speed of 217mph. Not bad for a country still building steam locomotives not too many years ago, and with many still in service!

08:2535667I've not yet been to St.Pancras, but the above station looks fantastic - I bet it gets more respect than our's do - no feet on seats, no chewing tickets, no smoking, no food or drink.
If one of our train inspectors (or a member of the public) tried to impose the above rules, he'd probably get beaten up, at the very minimum, verbally abused.
Until we make examples of some of the people who break the rules, we will never change attitudes.

09:5535674More than that, Roger, it would be nice to see some decent manners on show as well as the should-be-expected stuff you mention. Perhaps no nasty loud ringtones and blared conversations on mobiles. I endured one a couple of weeks ago: she had to share with the entire carriage at several decibels above a chain saw that her friends boyfriend had some unsavoury habits (all nicely outlined monosyllabically at full volume) and what her friend thought about it - all neatly interspersed with some colourful words of four letters, again monosyllabic. And women changing babies nappies on the carriage tables, next to their cans of special brew - of which they seemed to take considerably more care. And young fellas swigging cans of something that clearly caused them to gather wind, which they cheerfully and noisily expelled for the delight of their fellow passengers. While swearing.

10:2535675We do moan from time to time on how other countries operate, ie maybe stronger tactics.
Singapore wont allow litter dropped anywhere and you have to use crossings only.
When i visited spain sadly the drunken English unable to hold the massive amount of drink had the police at the hotel the police did go in with batons
but they sorted an explosive situation
So whilst we should make sure we treat people fairly, i wonder what posters feelings are

11:0235690Guards at Dover and of course other depots do get attacked regually I suppose it happens once every 4-6 weeks at Dover, they are of course on thier own apart from the train drivers.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

11:1035694Talk to Billy Martin your old Union Rep,I am sure he will have the official figs, the radio's and phones are ok but when you are between stations and someone it thumping you,you have to wait until you get to the next station and hope that the police can get there, unfortunately sometimes they don't or can't get there.

11:1335695The Chinese, like a number of other countries are more stricter than we are. Like the current drug smuggler facing execution, they`ll be an outcry all round the world from human rights groups, dogooders etc. But I wonder how many countless other individuals get put off by seeing what they risk for getting caught? (Please note, I`m all for human rights groups against torture and for people being jailed for political or religious beliefs). Ref post 6.

12:2535708Good posting Bern.
And the fruits of that strictness Colin, is a much better and ordered society - surely what we need ?
I agree about Human Rights, if they have responsibilities too; I'm against torture as well as I think (most) people will say anything to stop it, so that won't bring the truth, just agreement.

02:3135752It never used to be, its only since independence in 1963.
I was last there in 1954 and it wasn't all that clean but a good interesting place to have a run ashore.
I believe that chewing gum is banned, it wouldn't be a bad idea in this country. It makes me sick when I walk through Dover, especially when it is wet, to see all the droppings.

09:2535761It is a culture thing again - manners and respect are less important than they were, which leads to disrespect of our environment and of other people. Which appears to lead to people thinking it is ok to drop litter, spit and swear in public. It isn't.

Think your right, society has to change in the UK but has to be major changes to achieve that.
In Singapore national service is still in play no matter where you come from.

11:2435773You are very right Bern and you are too Keith - National Service or these boot-camps would give young blokes a good sense of self-discipline.

20:1835871Would you give us a 245mph railway system Vic, or go back to steam? And you may answer.

20:5235872I would go back to steam and again real trains that run all the year round bad and good weather+just two rails and coal .
