i read the other day that they are very much in demand as people revert to traditional fires because of extortionate energy prices.
it is important to get yours swept prior to using one the fire service say.

Ah, but does he have a "cockerny accent"(sic) and a mate called Mary Poppins?
I remember many a Sweep attending local weddings, seems it brings good luck, maybe Kath will have the answer as to why?

Just get some brushes do it yourself
You only need a sheet with a small hole in the middle to stop the mess,
I get my wife to hold the sheet and I do the brush work ,the trick is to go up and down 4 times with a good stiff brush

If you use an open fire, a twice-yearly inspection and chimney sweeping by a qualified sweep (with certificate) is usually a condition of your house fire insurance policy. You'll find it in the small print, you know, the bit that nobody reads until it's too late. An example of where DIY can get you into big trouble. With sweeps charging £35-50 a time, it's really not worth the risk. The sweep we used when we were in Farnham did it for free if you bought his logs.

Andy B - I think it is Bill Nash's grandson who runs the business now (lives Northbourne area I think). He used to come round with his grandfather to sweep our chimney.

We've just had our chimney swept via an opening which is only accessible from our next-door neighbour's garden. The sweep was so fussy that he brushed the brickwork down afterwards and then came into the house to vacuum up where there was no dust anyway. A lot different from a sweep we used when living in Shepherdswell who took a dislike to being paid by cheque and left more soot in the house than he sucked up in his vacuum.

Quote from another source:
Many insurance companies will no longer pay out for claims made due to chimney fires unless the chimney has been swept by a professional chimney sweep and a recognized chimney sweeping certificate has been issued.
Also if the fire brigade are called out due to a chimney fire and it is proven that the chimney has not been maintained properly the local council can bill you for the call out, and in some cases this has been known to exceed £2000 per fire crew. Clean chimneys do not catch fire.

i posted some photos on here a couple of years ago of a chimney fire about 10 doors from me, the resident used to collect wood all year and use as as an open fire. when the fire chap in charge told her not to have any more fires in future unless the chimney was swept she was most indignant.

For anyone still looking for a chimney sweep, I've had an email from a forum reader recommending David Gardner of Buckland Chimney Sweeps (01304 830700). Apparently there's a waiting list so best to book early!
