Dover Town's main problem in attracting the 'salaries' is its housing stock. There are a few quality areas such as Castle Ave/Salisbury Road area but most quality housing is to be found in the villages around. Folkestone Road is unattractive because of the traffic/parking and social issues and a high-salaried City worker is unlikely to find a two-up-two-down in the Clarendons an attractive proposition.

I agree, Howard. The point I was making is that there are some people out there who clearly have an agenda to do Dover down.

Jack, I think all busy stations have their moments, especially last at night at weekends . I use Dover Priory very regularly and, like others, haven't had the expeience you have had. It's a shame you have had to see this.
My impression of Ramsgate station is that it is the roughest around, based on a high proportion of violent late night incidents. The 20.50 shuttle service to Ashford via Dover Priory on a Saturday night is no fun at all, I can tell you.
Canterbury East late at night can be hair-raising too.
Brits + booze - all that social repression comes bursting out.

one is run by someone who emigrated many years ago but thinks it is fun to slag off his home town from afar whilst egging on others to do the same.

Dover Priory is by far the busiest station in the District with 904,970 entries and exits in 2012/13. Deal has 509,218 entries and exists. Both are down on 2011/12 - Dover by 10,000 and Deal by 25,000 so counter to the argument that some people seem to be making. The development of increased parking facilities at Dover Priory makes perfect sense given the growth agenda.
Agreed, Peter re: housing. We are now starting to see developments that will appeal to this market. Elysium Park is a good example, developed by local firm, Pentland Homes. Work has also started at Whitfield and the Buckland Mill apartments look very attractive.

What we need is some high quality residential developments in the Marina/Western Docks areas. It would be a crying shame to use all that land for low-added-value general freight.

Absolutely, Peter. As they say, location, location, location! I'm sure some well appointed apartments with spectacular views across the Channel will attract London money. As well as our great links with London we can also sell the benefits of French lifestyle too thanks to our great links with the continent!

It surprises me that the properties in Cambridge terrace have not been snapped up and renovated
beautiful buildings just a stroll from the beach.

I always thought the anchor store in the DTIZ ought to be Carrefour or Auchan not ASDA or M&S.

Don't under estimate the powerful brand proposition that M&S has on the Continent, Peter. Alongside their existing strategy to focus on food and online, they are also expanding again in Europe. I think the new M&S will attract major footfall in the new development.

I don't think it has a brand abroad except among the metropolitan elites, and perhaps in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Kevin, those station figures are some what distorted for various factors and shouldn't be taken for gospel. There are still many people in the district who drive to Dover Priory because of the high-speed service. From January residents will be able to utilise services at Martin Mill, Walmer, Deal & Sandwich so personally I think a multi-storey at Dover is no longer needed.

A multi-storey should help the side streets in the area where so many now park and it might help workers who drive into town and park if it is cheap enough for long stay.

Very interesting. There seems to be a lot of support for these vanity schemes in the name of regeneration. Surely these same notions were the driving force behind the decision to build Burlington House.

I don't think Network Rail have the budget for "vanity" projects. They are clearly making an investment based on the popularity of the high speed service and the demand for more car parking at Dover Priory.

Burlington House was never intended as office space, it was to be a hotel run by a Swiss group, whilst the current hotel was intended to be used as offices. At the 11th hour the Hotel Chain pulled out and so the decision was made to reverse the occupancy...
