14:2630758Very true Ross. I went down to the town two Sundays ago, I couldn't get a coffee anywhere other than the awful Wetherspoons which I refuse to patronise, there didn't appear to be any shops open and a number of pubs were closed.
If you run a business your whole efforts should be put into that business, my pubs were open 365 days per year, yes even Christmas Day.
It seems nowadays that business owners only want to open between 9.0am - 5.30pm six days a week and however busy the town may be will not exceed those hours, it is little wonder that a lot fail.

16:0930767La Salle Verte coffee shop in Cannon Street was open 7 days a week during the summer months and only closed on Sundays in September when trade had dropped off; the two Sundays before he closed, he didn't take enough to cover the staff costs.
Curiosity of Dover, the gift shop was also open during the summer months and again, she only closed when trade had dropped off.
If it was worth it, they would open.

16:5730772I think I would be happy if some made the effort to open on high days and holidays - such as the one I keep banging on about when CostaPacket were hoovering around us and refusing to serve us before 5pm on the day the Christmas lights were going on.

22:0631867back to the regeneration pot for hard up businesses, your dover today quotes a leading councillor as saying that businesses are having a lot of trouble accessing any free money.
the council say that 8 grand has been taken up so far, the pot is 400 grand.
how long before this money will disappear from it's original target and get used elsewhere?
we have seen it with the priory play area, possibly now the hospital.

08:4831883Howard that money is specifically earmarked to help hard pressed businesses but it is up to them to apply for it. DDC and the Chamber have publicised this, as have others. If it is not taken up then I do indeed expect it to 'disappear' particularly in these financially difficult times.

09:4031894The money is there for those businesses that can show hardship, so indeed why would they not apply? Its up to them.

10:1031897I would agree with that Keith but applications have not really come in. DDC assure us that the application process is not too complex (by local government terms that is). No-one has been refused though one case has met a roadblock because the accountant has not responed to an enquiry, the case remains open.

13:0931905Very true Barry.
I was surprised to read that the Labour Councillor didn't know about this £400,000 for small businesses to apply for, that's quite disgraceful on his part - not sure why he went to the papers instead of asking DDC. There's no brownie-points as far as ignorance is concerned - just a call to DDC would have given him all the info he needed.
I have contacted all the businesses I have email addresses and some I haven't, I have visited in person; it is up to them and the process is not complicated at all.
